Why do we love this case?

The St Émilion Gran Cru classification marks wines of excellence. This Gran Cru collection features wines of distinction that not only rise to the lofty expectations of their regionality but best them. If you are ever eyeing off a true 'unicorn wine' - something in the vein of Cheval Blanc or Petrus, then you're going to be shopping in Bordeaux and, specifically, the Right Bank of Bordeaux. That's where St Émilion resides, among the giants of the global vino landscape. The Right Bank's preference for merlot dominant blends over cab sauv dominant blends makes for wines that are luxurious, rich, powerful, and (importantly) approachable in youth.

1x Château Barrail Bellegrave Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2022

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

From a tiny, family-run Grand Cru tucked into Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, this is proper Saint-Émilion without the billionaire price tag. Just 6 hectares on classic clay-limestone (the region’s sweet spot), planted mostly to Merlot with a serious Cabernet Franc kicker, and worked by hand for a small-batch, old-school feel. The name nods to the local “Barrail du Blanc” pebble soils and the estate’s farming roots — a genuine slice of Right Bank history turned wine.

You'd pay $110 full price.

1x Château Haut-Rocher Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2020

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

Two words... Grand Cru - this one's from some of the best vineyards in the whole of Bordeaux. Hillside vineyards brushing right up against Saint-Émilion, soaked in southern sunshine, with old vines sunk deep into clay and limestone. Translation: Balance, depth and heaps of natural Bordeaux character.

You'd pay $100 full price.

The stars of the Right-Bank are on show here with 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc complimenting one another to deliver a wine of the utmost composure — elegance, purity and all of that Bordeaux sophistication. 1x Chateau Galius Saint-Emillon Grand Cru Merlot Blend 2020

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

In mofo history, we have never seen a wine fly out the door quite like this one. No exaggeration, never before has a wine been as loved by the mofo community. This Grand Cru Saint-Emilion is rich and ripe and at a magical point in its life, drinking very, very well. It’s a stunning example of how Bordeaux terroir shines through the merlot grape in all its generosity and finesse, with a touch of cab franc (15%) adding fresh notes to all that fruit. Expect an abundance of plums, vanilla and milk chocolate. Forest floor and herbal undergrowth are hidden softly underneath - sage and oregano, tobacco leaf. Spice ekes in around my edges, with broad, silky tannin riding on a backbone of bright acidity and keen structure. You can rest assured that you are going to be drinking the top-of-the-top of Bordeaux here.

You'd pay $90 full price.

1x Château Hauts de Granget Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

We’re getting pretty good at finding exceptional Bordeaux at unbelievable pricing. Humble, I know. But sometimes it’s good to give yourself a little pat on the back. We think we earned it with this one. It’s Saint-Emilion Grand Cru composed of 85% merlot and 15% cab franc that’s hitting all the right notes. And we’re not the only ones that feel that way - this is a certified Mofo fave.

You'd pay $80 full price.

1x Château Capet Duverger Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

Red — Merlot Blend

Bordeaux — France

Château Capet Duverger is the perfect example of a co-op driven wine success story in France. This Grand Cru from Saint-Emilion is of course led by merlot with the remaining fruit being cabernet sauvignon. The grapes are fermented in a gravity-flow winery before being put to rest in 20% new French oak for 12 months. It’s ripe, approachable, spicy and lengthy. Plum and blackberry lead the way with notes of leather, mushroom, vanilla and caramel adding complexity. Like many of the more modern Right Bank wines, this can be enjoyed now, but would also benefit from more time in the cellar.

You'd pay $78 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

St Émilion Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of Right Bank Bordeaux winemaking, where strict classification standards ensure only exceptional wines earn this prestigious designation. These wines come from the same region that produces legendary bottles like Cheval Blanc and Petrus, benefiting from unique terroir and centuries of winemaking expertise. The Grand Cru classification requires rigorous annual tastings and vineyard assessments, making these wines a reliable indicator of quality and collectibility.

Merlot's naturally softer tannin structure and fruit-forward character makes Right Bank Bordeaux wines more accessible in their youth compared to the cabernet sauvignon-dominant Left Bank styles. While Left Bank wines often require decades of cellaring to reach their peak, merlot-based blends offer immediate pleasure with their rich, velvety texture and approachable power. This doesn't mean they lack ageing potential - these wines can evolve beautifully over 15-20 years, developing complex secondary flavours while maintaining their inherent elegance.

The 2019, 2020, and 2022 vintages each bring distinct characteristics shaped by their growing conditions and winemaking evolution. 2019 was an exceptional vintage across Bordeaux with perfect ripening conditions, while 2020 offered concentrated fruit from a challenging but ultimately successful harvest. The inclusion of multiple vintages allows you to experience how the same terroir expresses itself differently year to year, providing an educational journey through recent Bordeaux history.

The rich, spiced profile with notes of blackberry, cedar, and leather makes these wines perfect companions for robust dishes like slow-braised lamb, aged beef, or duck confit. The earthy undertones and spice complexity also pair beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, mature cheeses, and even dark chocolate desserts. The approachable tannin structure means they won't overpower lighter proteins like roasted chicken or pork, making them versatile dinner party wines.

These Grand Cru wines showcase the beautiful duality of Right Bank Bordeaux - they're delicious now but will reward patience with proper cellaring. The merlot-dominant blends offer immediate pleasure with their fruit-forward character and integrated tannins, perfect for enjoying over the next 3-5 years. However, with proper storage, they'll continue developing complexity for 10-15 years, with the fruit evolving into more savoury, tertiary flavours while maintaining their essential elegance and power.
