1x Austin's Wines 6ft6 Pinot Noir 2024

Red — Pinot Noir

Geelong — Australia

Geelong is, for me, the best pinot noir producing region outside of Burgundy. Not the USA's Oregon, not New Zealand's Central Otago - little old Geelong on Victoria's south coast.
Fresh and inviting, this will give a lot with just a little swirl in the glass. Raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, some sweet spice, fennel, thistle. The complexity far outpaces its price tag. The wine is structured without sacrificing finesse, which means it's pretty without being thin or wussy. This is dangerous value at $15 and worth stocking up because we don't anticipate we'll be able to hang onto it too for long.

You'd pay $45 full price.

1x Warramunda Estate Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2024

White — Chardonnay

Yarra Valley — Australia

A brilliant wine. Chardonnay that feels premium in every way. The weight. The length. The way it changes and evolves as it breathes a little. The sheer amount of complexity in every glass. We're decidedly in cooler fruits here; green apples, pears, green grapes, some grapefruit, plentiful citrus. That fruit is stretched across some tightly wound, nervy acidity that snakes it's way up the palate to eventually define the long, fantastic finish. This is a wine that will have you coming back for more.

You'd pay $80 full price.

1x Pauletts Polish Hill River Riesling 2024

White — Riesling

Clare Valley — Australia

There's nothing better than a high-quality Clare Valley riesling. Polish Hill River, a sub-region of Clare Valley, is home to some of the best and most sought-after riesling fruit in Australia. With fruit as pure and beautiful as this, all you need in the winery is a deft hand to take it from vine to bottle, with as little intervention as possible. Luckily, this iconic Clare Valley producer has decades of experience doing just that, and the results are absolutely astounding.

You'd pay $45 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

This collection showcases three grape varieties that represent the holy trinity of cool-climate winemaking - each expressing terroir in distinctly different ways. Pinot Noir offers the ethereal complexity of red fruit and earth, Chardonnay demonstrates how white grapes can range from mineral-driven to creamy textures, while Riesling provides that electric acidity and aromatic intensity that makes sommeliers weak at the knees. Together, they span the spectrum from delicate to powerful, giving you a masterclass in how grape variety, region, and winemaking philosophy intersect.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling are the thinking person's grapes because they're incredibly transparent to their environment - they don't hide behind heavy oak or high alcohol like some varieties do. These grapes demand technical precision from winemakers and reward careful attention from drinkers with layers of complexity that evolve in the glass. They're also the backbone of some of the world's most prestigious wine regions, from Burgundy to the Mosel, making them essential varieties for anyone serious about understanding wine's potential for elegance and finesse.

Start with the Riesling to awaken your palate with its bright acidity and aromatic lift, then move to the Chardonnay to explore texture and weight, finishing with the Pinot Noir when your palate is fully engaged and ready for its subtle complexities. Pay attention to how each wine's acidity plays differently - the Riesling's razor-sharp precision, the Chardonnay's integrated backbone, and the Pinot's gentle lift. This progression will highlight how these varieties each handle the concept of 'brightness' in their own distinctive way.

The beauty of this trio lies in its versatility across different courses and cuisines. The Riesling's citrus and slate notes make it brilliant with spicy Asian dishes or fresh seafood, while the creamy Chardonnay with its white peach character pairs beautifully with roasted chicken or mushroom risotto. The Pinot Noir's raspberry and sour cherry profile alongside its earthy undertones makes it perfect for duck, salmon, or even vegetarian dishes with earthy mushrooms - essentially giving you wine options for an entire dinner party.

As 2024 vintages, these wines are crafted to showcase their youthful vibrancy and primary fruit characteristics right now, which is exactly when these styles shine brightest. The Riesling will maintain its electric acidity and develop honeyed complexity over 3-5 years, the Chardonnay will integrate further and gain richness over 2-4 years, while the Pinot Noir will develop more savoury, earthy notes over 3-6 years. However, they're all singing beautifully at present, so there's no need to wait - though having a few bottles allows you to explore how each variety evolves with time.
