If ever there was a grape capable of magic, it’s pinot noir. Little wonder it’s key to many of the most expensive wines in the world. Luckily, there’s none of that pomposity here.

1x Pierre Naigeon Vielles Vignes Fixin L'Olivier Bourgogne 2018

Red — Pinot Noir

Burgundy — France

Pierre Naigeon took a step away from high intervention with his 2018 vintage, instead eschewing any additives and minimalising sulphur usage. Not every vintage allows this hands-off approach, but 2018 certainly was one. And it really shows through in the wines. L'Olivier's fruit is quite bright, hinting at red currants and blackberries. The fresh and energetic palate sits in the more medium-bodied range, finishing up with firm yet approachable tannins. You'll find this showing really well now but there's at least a decade left of prime drinking in the bottle.

You'd pay $130 full price.

1x Warramunda Estate Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024

Red — Pinot Noir

Yarra Valley — Australia

When it comes to pinot noir, the Yarra Valley is at its best when its producing generous, sophisticated, juicy, reds. Lucky for all involved, Warramunda are very much in the business of producing generous, sophisticated, juicy pinots...
This single-vineyard site sits on the north-facing slopes of Coldstream, Yarra Valley, with 80% whole berries and 20% whole bunches, there's something exhilarating about this wine... A gorgeous bright ruby and crushed raspberry colour in the glass. Little flecks of blue and purple weave throughout. There is a crushed fruit aroma of raspberries and strawberries which feels very lively and close to the source. Energy and zeal in the glass. Plush and vibrant with well-integrated oak and a structure that will allow for aging, should the cellar beckon. This is brilliant small batch production from a certified Yarra icon - Warramunda.

You'd pay $80 full price.

1x Austin's Wines 6ft6 Pinot Noir 2024

Red — Pinot Noir

Geelong — Australia

Geelong is, for me, the best pinot noir producing region outside of Burgundy. Not the USA's Oregon, not New Zealand's Central Otago - little old Geelong on Victoria's south coast.
Fresh and inviting, this will give a lot with just a little swirl in the glass. Raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, some sweet spice, fennel, thistle. The complexity far outpaces its price tag. The wine is structured without sacrificing finesse, which means it's pretty without being thin or wussy. This is dangerous value at $15 and worth stocking up because we don't anticipate we'll be able to hang onto it too for long.

You'd pay $45 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

This collection showcases how terroir dramatically influences Pinot Noir's expression across three legendary wine regions. The Burgundy bottle represents the grape's spiritual home with earthy complexity, while the Southern Australian wine demonstrates the variety's adaptability to warmer climates with riper fruit profiles. The Marlborough example bridges these styles, offering New Zealand's signature bright acidity and herbaceous notes that make Pinot Noir so food-friendly.

Each region contributes distinct characteristics that reflect their unique climates and soils. The Burgundy wine typically shows forest floor earthiness and sour cherry notes, embodying the Old World's mineral-driven style. Southern Australia's warmer climate produces riper blackberry and spice flavours with softer tannins, while Marlborough's cool maritime influence creates vibrant strawberry and rhubarb notes with crisp acidity that cuts through rich foods beautifully.

The beauty of this trio lies in its versatility across different dining occasions and cuisines. The earthy Burgundy pairs magnificently with mushroom dishes, duck, or aged cheeses, while the fruit-forward Australian wine complements grilled salmon, roasted chicken, or even spiced lamb. The bright Marlborough bottle excels with lighter fare like herb-crusted pork, charcuterie boards, or vegetarian dishes where its acidity can shine.

This selection features exceptional examples from each region, including old vine fruit and single vineyard expressions that showcase site-specific character. The collection includes wines from Five Star Halliday rated wineries and staff-selected favourites, ensuring quality across all three bottles. These aren't just regional representatives - they're standout examples that demonstrate why Pinot Noir is considered one of the world's most expressive grape varieties.

For the ultimate exploration experience, taste these wines side by side at cellar temperature (around 16-18°C) using large Burgundy glasses to capture their aromatic complexity. Start with the lightest style and progress to the most intense, allowing each wine to breathe for 30 minutes before tasting. This comparative approach will highlight how the same grape variety can express completely different personalities based on where it's grown and how it's made.
