Why do we love this case?

The Barossa produces a myriad of varietals, and a myriad of varietal expressions. But none so famous, so internationally revered as the iconic Barossa Shiraz. Plummy, bold, densely rich fruited and as deeply inky-red as the soil they spring from. This trio celebrates that style with wines that speak loudly and proudly of place.

1x Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve Shiraz 2023

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

Hooley dooley. Old vine mastery. This has all the ethereal complexity that you can only really achieve when harvesting fruit from ancient vines. Gnarled and moody in the glass, as it's allowed to drink in a little air you'll see it evolve and open up to you. Something special to be sure. It’s always exciting to come across a wine with such presence in the glass. This has a powerful black fruit core that really ties the wine together, making it full and complete. The aromatic power of the wine walks the walk when it comes to the palate - glossy and full and rich. The fruit profile swarms the mouth; brambly, briary, bunchy. That freshness and focus of the fruit is followed by spice, coffee, and toffee nuance. This is immense in every sense of the word.

You'd pay $220 full price.

1x Utopos Shiraz 2022

Red — Shiraz

Barossa — Australia

In the glass, it’s a vibrant purple-crimson. The nose is alive with ripe satsuma plum, blueberry and blackberry, lifted by citrus blossom and violets. Then comes the complexity - layers of spice, liquorice, dark chocolate, fruitcake, olive tapenade, even an earthy note ortwo. The palate is plush and powerful, yet framed by fine, sandy tannins and pitch-perfect acidity that give it structure for the long haul. The winemaking is as traditional as it is thoughtful: hand-selected shiraz blocks across the undulating Utopos vineyard, touched with 3% cabernet and 3% mataro for lift and complexity, then matured for 18 months in seasoned French foudres and hogsheads. The result? A Barossa shiraz that’s both approachable in youth and destined for greatness over the next 10-20 years.

You'd pay $110 full price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Shiraz is renowned for its deeply inky-red colour and bold, plummy character that directly reflects the region's unique terroir. The warm climate and ancient soils produce wines with exceptional concentration and power, creating the full-bodied, densely rich fruit flavours that have made Barossa internationally famous. This trio showcases that iconic style with wines that express the meaty, spiced complexity and chocolate-vanilla richness that can only come from this legendary South Australian region.

The various vintages (2021-2023) allow you to experience how Barossa Shiraz evolves across different growing seasons and bottle age. Each vintage brings unique seasonal characteristics - the 2021 has had more time to develop secondary flavours like leather and earth, while the 2023 showcases vibrant primary fruit. This creates an educational tasting journey that demonstrates how the same varietal and region can express itself differently through time and winemaking approaches.

These rich, meaty Shiraz wines are perfect partners for robust dishes that can match their intensity and complement their spice and chocolate notes. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, barbecued beef ribs, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wines' licorice and vanilla characteristics also pair beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, while their blackberry and plum fruit can enhance game meats like venison or duck.

The exceptional ratings (95-97 points from respected critics like James Halliday and Wine Orbit) indicate these wines represent outstanding examples of premium Barossa Shiraz. These scores reflect not just immediate drinking pleasure, but also the wines' complexity, balance, and ageing potential. The Halliday Special Value Award particularly highlights that these wines deliver luxury-level quality at accessible prices, making this trio an excellent introduction to world-class Australian wine.

Old vine Shiraz vines in the Barossa, some over 100 years old, produce fruit with extraordinary concentration and complexity due to their deep root systems and naturally low yields. These ancient vines access deeper soil layers and minerals, contributing to the wines' distinctive earthy undertones and remarkable depth of flavour. The old vine designation in this collection indicates fruit sourced from these precious heritage plantings, which are considered among Australia's most valuable viticultural treasures.
