We’re getting pretty good at finding exceptional Bordeaux at unbelievable pricing. Humble, I know. But sometimes it’s good to give yourself a little pat on the back. We think we earned it with this one.

Why do we love this wine?

We’re getting pretty good at finding exceptional Bordeaux at unbelievable pricing. Humble, I know. But sometimes it’s good to give yourself a little pat on the back. We think we earned it with this one. It’s Saint-Emilion Grand Cru composed of 85% merlot and 15% cab franc that’s hitting all the right notes. And we’re not the only ones that feel that way. A score of 4.2 on Vivino and 96 points with a gold medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards seem to back up our assessment. The Decanter review below goes into a bit more detail for those remaining unconvinced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru represents the upper tier of this prestigious Right Bank appellation, requiring stricter vineyard management and lower yields than basic Saint-Emilion. The 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc blend is classic for this region, where the clay-limestone soils favour Merlot's plush texture. The Grand Cru classification, combined with awards like the Decanter World Wine Awards gold medal, indicates this wine meets the exacting standards that have made Saint-Emilion famous worldwide.

The cranberry notes come from the dominant Merlot, which provides bright red fruit character that's more elegant than the darker fruits found in Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. Leather develops through the wine's medium-bodied structure and likely some oak ageing, adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The spicebox elements emerge from the 15% Cabernet Franc, which contributes herbal and peppery notes that complement Merlot's roundness, creating the textured, savoury profile that defines quality Right Bank Bordeaux.

2019 was an excellent vintage across Bordeaux, particularly on the Right Bank where Merlot thrives. The growing season featured a warm, dry summer that allowed for optimal ripening without the excessive heat that can stress vines. This resulted in wines with concentrated flavours, good structure, and balanced acidity - qualities clearly reflected in this wine's 90-point James Suckling rating and gold medal recognition. The vintage's success explains why many 2019 Bordeaux wines are drinking beautifully now while still having excellent ageing potential.

The wine's textured, savoury profile and cranberry-leather-spicebox flavours make it incredibly food-friendly. Classic pairings include roasted lamb with herbs, duck breast with cherry sauce, or aged cheeses like Comté or aged cheddar. The medium body won't overpower lighter dishes like mushroom risotto or grilled salmon, while the Cabernet Franc's spicy notes complement dishes with black pepper, rosemary, or other Mediterranean herbs.

Quality Saint-Emilion Grand Cru from good vintages like 2019 typically peak between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this wine should drink beautifully through the late 2020s and into the 2030s. The Merlot provides approachable fruit in its youth, while the Cabernet Franc adds structure for longer ageing. With proper storage in a cool, dark place, you can expect the cranberry notes to evolve into more complex dried fruit flavours, while the leather and spice elements become more integrated and sophisticated.
