When we heard 5th generation McLaren Vale legends, Angove, were turning their hand to Barossa shiraz, we sat up and took notice. When we actually tasted the thing, we nearly fell off our chairs. Deep, dark, dense, delicious. This is a complete steal.

Why do we love this wine?

This wine was crafted using traditional techniques at the historic, century-old Angove winery. After gentle de-stemming, wild fermentation was embraced in open fermenters to let the site’s character shine. Twice-daily hand plunging and pump-overs built colour, structure and complexity. Once dry, the wine was basket-pressed and sent to French oak for a long, slow maturation. Blackberry compote, aniseed and crushed herbs leap from the glass, supported by overt cedar and warming spice. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with a velvety texture that weaves dark plum, mocha and savoury oak into a seamless whole. Bright acidity and fine tannins stretch the finish long and clean. This is Barossa done beautifully. Drink now - it'll last for 10 years in the cellar but just drink it, it's so good right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases traditional winemaking at its finest, using wild fermentation in open fermenters rather than controlled commercial yeasts. The hand plunging and pump-overs twice daily, followed by basket pressing and French oak maturation, creates complexity that mass production simply cannot achieve. These labour-intensive techniques allow the Barossa Valley terroir to express itself naturally, resulting in a wine with genuine character and depth.

The 2021 vintage in Barossa Valley benefited from ideal growing conditions that produced concentrated, well-balanced fruit. This wine demonstrates the vintage's success through its seamless integration of rich dark fruit flavours with structured tannins and bright acidity. The fact that it's drinking beautifully now while having 10-year cellaring potential shows the vintage's exceptional balance between immediate appeal and long-term ageing capability.

The French oak maturation adds layers of complexity beyond simple wood flavours, contributing cedar notes and warming spices that complement rather than dominate the fruit. French oak is prized for its tight grain and subtle influence, allowing the blackberry, plum and mocha characteristics to shine while adding structural backbone. The long, slow maturation process ensures the oak integrates seamlessly, creating that velvety texture and extended finish.

This wine's rich, full-bodied character and savoury oak elements make it perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, grilled ribeye, or aged hard cheeses. The mocha and dark plum flavours also pair beautifully with game meats or mushroom-based dishes. The wine's bright acidity and fine tannins provide enough structure to cut through rich, fatty foods while the warming spices complement hearty, herb-crusted preparations.

While this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential for up to 10 years, it's crafted to be thoroughly enjoyable right now. The winemaker's recommendation to 'just drink it' reflects the wine's current perfect balance of fruit intensity, oak integration, and tannin structure. If you do choose to cellar it, expect the primary fruit flavours to evolve into more complex secondary characteristics, though you'll miss out on the vibrant blackberry and plum notes that are so appealing in its youth.
