"This is why red wine is cellared" - Campbell Mattinson. Let's not beat around the bush, this is a big shiraz, even by McLaren Vale's standards. Eleven years of careful cellaring has brought a smoothness and silkiness to this wine, whilst not stifling the natural grunt and gutsiness of this gorgeous drop. Aged shiraz, done very, very, very well.

Why do we love this wine?

Eleven years on and absolutely strutting its stuff. As Mattinson noted, this is exactly why we cellar red wine. It’s all come together beautifully - rich notes of coffee, blackberry, leather and earthiness meet sweet spice, hints of liquorice, and a long list of other subtleties. The palate’s smooth, layered and complete, framed by fine, resolved tannins that still hold the structure beautifully. All the promise it showed in its youth? Fully delivered. This is a mature stunner, right in the sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Museum releases represent wines that have been carefully cellared by the winery for extended periods, allowing them to develop complex tertiary characteristics that can't be achieved in young wines. This 2014 Shiraz has spent eleven years maturing, transforming from its youthful fruit-forward profile into a sophisticated wine with evolved flavours of coffee, leather, and earthiness. The extended ageing has allowed the tannins to soften and integrate beautifully, creating the smooth, layered palate that makes this wine so exceptional now.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent, creates perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop both power and elegance. The region's diverse soils, ranging from red clay to sandy loam, contribute to the complexity you taste in this wine - the rich blackberry fruit, spice notes, and distinctive earthiness. The area's reputation for producing some of Australia's most age-worthy Shiraz is evident in how beautifully this 2014 has evolved over eleven years.

This Aramis demonstrates perfectly how a full-bodied Shiraz evolves from primary fruit flavours to complex secondary and tertiary notes over time. When young, these wines often show bold fruit and firm tannins that need time to integrate. After eleven years, this wine now displays the hallmarks of perfect maturity - resolved tannins that provide structure without harshness, and a seamless integration of fruit, spice, and earthy complexity. The smooth, layered palate indicates it's hit its sweet spot for drinking.

The evolved flavours in this mature Shiraz - coffee, leather, liquorice, and sweet spice - make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes that can match its complexity. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's earthiness complements the protein's depth. The smooth tannins and full body also pair beautifully with aged hard cheeses or dishes featuring mushrooms and herbs, where the wine's tertiary characteristics can shine alongside similarly complex flavours.

The exceptional ratings (95pts Wine Orbit, 94pts Halliday) reflect this wine's perfect execution of what great Australian Shiraz should be - powerful yet elegant, complex yet balanced. Critics recognise the seamless integration of fruit, oak, and tannins that only comes with proper cellaring and quality winemaking. The wine delivers on the promise it showed in youth, demonstrating the kind of evolution and complexity that separates truly great wines from merely good ones, which is exactly why critics and collectors value aged examples like this so highly.
