Just when we thought the Auld family couldn't get any better, we tried this 97pt beauty. This is what we mean when we say full-throttle Barossa shiraz - bold, honest, and bloody delicious. This is the region doing what it does best, delivering rich, ripe fruit, plenty of oak and zero apologies.

Why do we love this wine?

This one bursts with dark cherry and blueberry fruit before melting into layers of cocoa, toasted spice and just a hint of cedar. The palate's thick-set and velvety, with plush tannins holding everything in balance. There's real weight here but it's not clumsy - the structure carries all that power with confidence. Time in French oak (minimum 12 months) has rounded things out beautifully, adding polish to all that Barossa grunt. The oak integrates seamlessly, lending warmth and complexity without overwhelming the fruit or making things feel overdone. Crack it now with a leg of lamb and it'll show all its generous, fruit-forward character, tuck it away for a decade and watch it evolve into something even more complex and seductive as the tannins soften and tertiary characters e

Frequently Asked Questions

The Ernie Reserve showcases the sophisticated side of Barossa Shiraz through its careful French oak maturation and restrained winemaking approach. While many Barossa Shiraz wines can be overtly powerful, this wine demonstrates remarkable balance - the 97-point Wine Orbit rating reflects how the producer has harnessed the region's natural intensity without sacrificing elegance. The minimum 12 months in French oak adds European refinement to the bold Australian fruit character.

This wine offers excellent drinking now but has the structure to reward patient cellaring for up to a decade. The plush tannins and full-bodied weight suggest it will develop beautifully over 8-10 years, with tertiary flavours of leather, earth, and game emerging as the primary fruit characters integrate further. Barossa Shiraz from quality producers like Auld Family typically hits its stride around 5-7 years post-vintage, when the oak fully marries with the fruit.

The wine's rich, velvety texture and spice-driven profile make it perfect for robust red meat dishes, particularly slow-cooked preparations that match its intensity. Think braised beef short ribs, grilled lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The cocoa and cedar notes also complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or dark chocolate-based sauces, while the balanced tannins won't overpower game meats like venison.

The 97-point Wine Orbit score reflects exceptional winemaking that balances power with finesse - a hallmark of premium Barossa Shiraz. Single vineyard fruit allows for precise expression of terroir, while the boutique producer status indicates hands-on attention to detail throughout the winemaking process. The seamless oak integration and complex flavour layering demonstrate technical excellence that separates reserve-level wines from standard releases.

French oak imparts more subtle, refined tannins and spice notes compared to American oak's bold vanilla and coconut flavours. For this Barossa Shiraz, French oak allows the dark fruit and regional character to shine while adding complexity through gentle spice and structural support. The choice reflects a European winemaking philosophy that prioritises elegance and integration over overt oak flavours, resulting in a wine that will age more gracefully and develop greater complexity over time.
