Why do we love this wine?

The Barossa Valley is home to quite a few multi-generational wine families. There are legacies as far as the eye can see, stretching across the Barossa plains and rooted as deep as the oldest vineyards. The Aulds are one such family, with the current generation Sam and Jock paying tribute to their lineage who were planting Australian vineyards in the mid 1800's. Each sip tells a story—of sun-soaked vineyards, family traditions, and a relentless pursuit of quality. After the first taste of Ernie shiraz you won't be looking back.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Ernie is a single vineyard expression, meaning all grapes come from one specific plot rather than being blended from multiple sites across the region. This allows the wine to showcase the unique terroir characteristics of that particular vineyard, creating a more focused and distinctive flavour profile. Single vineyard wines often display greater complexity and a stronger sense of place, which explains why this wine earned an impressive 96 points from Sam Kim at Wine Orbit.

These savoury characteristics are hallmarks of premium Barossa Shiraz, particularly from older vines and exceptional vintages like 2023. The meaty notes develop from the wine's full-bodied structure and likely extended skin contact during fermentation, while black olive flavours emerge from the interaction between Shiraz's natural tannins and the warm Barossa climate. These complex savoury elements, combined with blackcurrant fruit, create the layered profile that distinguishes great Australian Shiraz from simpler, fruit-forward styles.

Given its full-bodied structure, single vineyard pedigree, and exceptional 96-point rating, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years or more. The 2023 vintage was particularly favourable in the Barossa, producing wines with both power and elegance that will develop beautifully over time. While delicious now, the wine's tannin structure and concentrated fruit will integrate and evolve, developing tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and spice that complement the existing blackcurrant and savoury notes.

The wine's meaty and black olive characteristics make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked osso buco. The full-bodied palate weight can stand up to rich, flavourful preparations, while the blackcurrant fruit provides a lovely contrast to gamey meats or aged cheeses. Consider Mediterranean-inspired dishes with olives, herbs, and grilled vegetables, as these will echo the wine's savoury complexity and create harmonious flavour bridges.

The Aulds represent one of the Barossa's multi-generational wine families, with roots tracing back to the mid-1800s when their ancestors were among the early vineyard planters in Australia. This deep historical connection means they have access to some of the valley's oldest vine material and accumulated knowledge passed down through generations. Current winemakers Sam and Jock Auld combine this traditional wisdom with modern techniques, creating wines that honour their heritage while expressing contemporary excellence - evident in The Ernie's outstanding critical acclaim.
