Geelong is, for me, the best pinot noir producing region outside of Burgundy. Not the USA's Oregon, not New Zealand's Central Otago - little old Geelong on Victoria's south coast.

Why do we love this wine?

Fresh and inviting, this will give a lot with just a little swirl in the glass. Raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, some sweet spice, fennel, thistle. The complexity far outpaces its price tag. The wine is structured without sacrificing finesse, which means it's pretty without being thin or wussy. This is dangerous value at this price, and worth stocking up because we don't anticipate we'll be able to hang onto it too long.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine delivers complexity that far exceeds its price point, combining structured elegance with finesse - a rare balance in affordable Pinot Noir. The 2024 vintage showcases the cool-climate advantages of Geelong, where maritime influences help preserve the delicate aromatics and natural acidity that make Pinot Noir so food-friendly. Austin's Wines has crafted something that drinks like a much more expensive bottle, which is why it's earned multiple staff recommendations and likely won't stay on shelves long.

Geelong's cool maritime climate is ideal for Pinot Noir, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining the bright acidity and delicate fruit flavours evident in this bottle. The region's proximity to Port Phillip Bay moderates temperatures, preventing the jammy, overripe characteristics that can plague Pinot Noir from warmer areas. This climate influence is clearly expressed in the wine's fresh raspberry and winter strawberry notes, combined with the herbal complexity of fennel and thistle that speaks to the region's terroir.

The wine's light body and bright fruit profile make it incredibly versatile with food, particularly excellent with duck, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes where you want the wine to complement rather than overpower. The raspberry and sour cherry notes pair beautifully with game birds or pork tenderloin, while the underlying spice and herbal elements make it a natural match for dishes featuring thyme, rosemary, or fennel. Its structured yet delicate nature also makes it perfect for cheese plates featuring soft, creamy varieties.

While this wine is absolutely delicious now and showcases the fresh, vibrant character that makes young Pinot Noir so appealing, it has the structure to develop beautifully over 3-5 years. The current raspberry and strawberry fruit will evolve into more complex secondary flavours like forest floor and dried herbs, while the wine's natural acidity will help preserve its elegance. Given its exceptional value, consider buying multiple bottles - some for immediate enjoyment and others to watch develop.

While the specific meaning isn't detailed, wine names often reflect personal stories, vineyard characteristics, or winemaker quirks that make each bottle unique. Austin's Wines is known for their approachable yet serious winemaking style, and this playful naming suggests a wine that doesn't take itself too seriously despite its impressive quality credentials. The name adds personality to what's already a standout Pinot Noir that punches well above its weight class, embodying the kind of unpretentious excellence that Australian wine does so well.
