Beringer has been shaping California cabernet since the 1800s, and this bottling has long been a favourite for its mix of richness, structure and pure drinking pleasure. The wonderfully aged 2015 vintage is a beauty - powerful and full-bodied, yet remarkably approachable, with all the hallmarks that make Beringer cabernet such a prized slice of Napa/Sonoma wine country.

Why do we love this wine?

Deep, dark and gorgeously framed. In the glass, the garnet-purple hue hints at the richness to come. Aromas of oak spice, dark berries and chocolate mocha draw you in, while the palate delivers mountain blackberries, ripe plum and cassis layered with earthy truffle notes. Full-bodied and concentrated, this is cabernet that shows both oomph and style, with fine tannins carrying a long, velvety finish. Seven years on from harvest, the wine has hit its stride, offering complexity and depth without losing freshness. Drink now for its plush fruit and savoury detail, or hold a little longer to watch it evolve further in bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Beringer Cabernet has reached its optimal drinking window after seven years of bottle ageing. The 2015 vintage was exceptional in Napa Valley, with ideal growing conditions that produced concentrated fruit with natural acidity. At this stage, the wine has developed beautiful secondary characteristics like truffle earthiness while maintaining its fresh fruit core, representing the perfect balance between youthful vigour and mature complexity.

Napa Valley's unique terroir combines warm days with cool nights, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to develop intense flavours while retaining crucial acidity. The valley's diverse soils, from volcanic ash to alluvial deposits, contribute to the wine's complexity and mineral backbone. This particular bottle showcases classic Napa characteristics - the mountain blackberry notes reflect the region's elevation, while the full-bodied structure demonstrates why Napa Cabernet is considered among the world's finest.

Decant this Cabernet 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the complex aromas of oak spice, chocolate mocha, and dark berries to fully express themselves. Serve at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux glasses to concentrate the bouquet. The wine's full-bodied nature and fine tannin structure make it perfect for pairing with rich dishes like grilled ribeye, lamb with herbs, or aged hard cheeses that complement its savoury truffle notes.

The chocolate and mocha characteristics develop from a combination of factors including the grape's natural compounds, oak barrel ageing, and bottle maturation. Cabernet Sauvignon naturally contains compounds that can express as chocolate when fully ripe, while French or American oak barrels contribute vanilla and spice notes that meld into mocha-like flavours. After seven years, these elements have integrated beautifully, creating the wine's signature rich, layered profile that Beringer is renowned for.

While this Cabernet is drinking beautifully now with its plush fruit and developed complexity, it has the structure to evolve further over the next 5-8 years. The fine tannins and concentrated fruit suggest it will continue developing more tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco, and forest floor. However, if you prefer wines with more primary fruit expression, enjoy it within the next 2-3 years when the blackberry and plum characteristics remain prominent.
