There’s something unmistakably Coonawarra about this Cabernet (and it's not just the name 'Brand' stamped all over the label – red earth, a cool lift of mint, and that plush core of blackcurrant fruit. It’s a wine with both boots-on-the-ground authenticity and its own form of gutsy finesse. Red earth caked under fingernails. Akubra tilted just right. This is the real deal.

Why do we love this wine?

From Coonawarra's 'mid-west' comes a cabernet with down-to-earth character that slowly but surely ruins all other Coonawarra cabs. Weighty but vibrant, brimming with cherry, blackcurrant, after-dinner mint and that unmistakable chocolate ripple biscuit richness. Ripe berry fruit lifted by juicy acidity, framed in fine tannins that tighten beautifully at the finish. Cool, lingering freshness woven with blackcurrant pastille and powdered chocolate - this is textbook contemporary Coonawarra.
Plush, powerful, persistent. Dense blackberry pastilles and mulberry with tobacco, mocha, fennel and clove complexity. Dusty tannins coat the palate from coast to coast, while judicious oak hints at where bottle age will take this beauty - give it a good decant and you'll be well-rewarded... leave it a few years and you'll be in heaven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's mid-west sits in the sweet spot of this famous wine region, benefiting from the area's renowned terra rossa soil over limestone bedrock. This positioning provides excellent drainage while retaining moisture, creating ideal conditions for cabernet sauvignon to develop the region's signature eucalyptus and mint characteristics. The slightly warmer microclimate compared to Coonawarra's cooler southern sections allows for fuller ripening while maintaining the elegant structure the region is celebrated for.

While this cabernet is drinking beautifully now with proper decanting, it's built for the long haul with its dense tannin structure and concentrated fruit. Coonawarra cabernets typically hit their stride between 5-10 years, when the dusty tannins soften and integrate with the fruit, allowing secondary flavours like tobacco and mocha to emerge more prominently. Given the wine's power and persistence, it could easily reward cellaring for 15-20 years, developing classic aged cabernet characteristics of leather, cedar, and dried herbs.

Young, full-bodied cabernets like this 2023 benefit enormously from decanting because it allows the dense tannins to soften and the concentrated flavours to open up. The wine's powerful structure means it's quite tight when first opened, so decanting for 1-2 hours will help reveal the complex layers of blackcurrant pastille, chocolate, and spice notes. This process essentially fast-tracks what would happen naturally with bottle age, making the wine more approachable and expressive in its youth.

This full-bodied cabernet's rich blackcurrant fruit and firm tannin structure make it perfect for robust red meat dishes like grilled ribeye, lamb shanks, or aged beef. The wine's chocolate and mocha notes complement dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or truffle-based sauces, while its natural acidity cuts through rich, fatty foods beautifully. Hard aged cheeses like vintage cheddar or pecorino also pair wonderfully, as the wine's tannins provide a lovely counterpoint to the cheese's richness.

Scoring 97 points from Vinomasters and 96 from Wine Pilot places this cabernet in truly exceptional territory - these are scores typically reserved for wines that represent the pinnacle of their region and style. The Gold Medal from Melbourne International Wine Show adds further credibility, as this is one of Australia's most competitive wine competitions with rigorous judging standards. These accolades suggest the wine not only showcases classic Coonawarra character but does so with remarkable finesse and complexity that sets it apart from its peers.
