If you love Chianti, this is your next obsession. Same noble grape, same Tuscan soul — but Vino Nobile plays in a different league altogether. More structure, more depth, more presence in the glass. Think of it as Chianti's more serious older sibling who's been quietly doing impressive things and now everybody is paying attention.

Why do we love this wine?

Montepulciano is one of Tuscany's most historic wine towns, and Canneto are one of its most trusted organic producers. The 2019 is exactly what this region does best - ripe red fruits, violet, a hint of coffee and a firm, powdery tannin structure that gives it real backbone without ever feeling heavy-handed. This is a genuinely powerful wine. Not in a knock-you-sideways way, but in a this-is-seriously-well-built way. It's approachable right now with a bit of air - give it a couple of hours in a decanter and it really opens up - but it's also got the bones to reward patience if you can keep your hands off it. Fire up something from the grill, find a good piece of aged cheese, and let Tuscany do the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

While both are Sangiovese-based Tuscan wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano comes from a smaller, more prestigious DOCG zone with stricter regulations. The wines must be aged longer and typically show more concentration and structure than standard Chianti. This Canneto example demonstrates the classic power and elegance that separates Vino Nobile from its more famous neighbour, with that distinctive firm tannin backbone that defines the appellation.

Give this wine at least two hours in a decanter to really show its best. The 2019 vintage has developed enough to be approachable now, but the full-bodied structure and firm tannins need time to soften and integrate. You'll notice the violet and coffee notes become more pronounced with proper aeration, while the powdery tannins smooth out to create a more harmonious drinking experience.

Organic viticulture in Tuscany often results in wines with more authentic terroir expression and better aging potential. Canneto's organic approach means no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, allowing the Sangiovese vines to develop deeper root systems and more concentrated fruit flavours. This natural farming philosophy aligns perfectly with the traditional winemaking methods that have made Montepulciano famous for centuries, resulting in wines that truly reflect their historic terroir.

This wine's firm tannin structure and earthy complexity make it perfect for grilled meats, especially lamb or beef with herbs. The black cherry and violet notes complement aged cheeses beautifully - try it with Pecorino Toscano or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. Traditional Tuscan dishes like wild boar ragu or bistecca alla fiorentina would be classic pairings that honour the wine's regional heritage.

This 2019 is drinking beautifully now with proper decanting, showing the approachable side of well-made Vino Nobile. However, the serious structure and powdery tannins suggest it has excellent aging potential for another 8-10 years. If you enjoy more primary fruit flavours, drink it within the next few years; if you prefer the complex tertiary notes that develop with age, cellar it for maximum reward.
