This is what 'Baby Barolo' is all about - hard-core nebbiolo without all the hard work. Dry yet pleasantly rounded, with enveloping tannins and a balanced structure. The wine is delicate, refined, and beautifully balanced, this one's just showing off nebbiolo’s signature elegance and ability to go the distance.

Why do we love this wine?

Hand-selected nebbiolo grapes are delicately pressed and left to ferment with the skins for 14 days at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for 18 months - at least 6 months in oak barrels, equally split between Austrian and French oak - developing a harmonious flavour profile and a pale, incisive colour. The Superiore designation means stricter production requirements and additional aging compared to standard nebbiolo d'Alba - you're getting elevated quality and complexity here.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine carries the Superiore designation, which requires stricter production standards and extended ageing compared to regular Nebbiolo d'Alba. The additional complexity comes from 18 months of careful maturation, with at least 6 months in a blend of Austrian and French oak barrels. This extended process develops greater depth and harmony in the wine's structure, making it a step up in quality and sophistication from entry-level nebbiolo expressions.

These elegant aromatics are hallmarks of well-made nebbiolo, particularly when the grapes are hand-selected and fermented with extended skin contact as done here. The 14-day maceration period extracts the varietal's signature floral compounds while preserving the bright sour cherry fruit character. Nebbiolo is renowned for this unique combination of delicate florals with tart red fruit, creating a wine that's both powerful and graceful - a testament to Piemonte's exceptional terroir.

The wine's textured, savoury profile and tarry undertones make it ideal for rich, earthy dishes that can match its intensity. Think braised beef with mushrooms, aged hard cheeses, or traditional Piemontese cuisine like tajarin al tartufo. The rose petal elegance also complements game birds and duck, while the wine's structure can handle robust tomato-based pasta dishes without being overwhelmed.

The combination of Austrian and French oak creates a more complex flavour foundation than single-origin barrels alone. French oak typically contributes subtle spice and vanilla notes while maintaining the wine's elegance, whereas Austrian oak often provides a slightly different tannin structure and aromatic profile. This dual approach allows the nebbiolo's natural characteristics to shine while adding complementary layers of complexity during the 6-month barrel ageing period.

While this wine has already undergone 18 months of careful ageing and is approachable now, nebbiolo traditionally rewards patience. The 2023 vintage will continue developing for 5-8 years, with the tannins softening and the rose petal and cherry notes evolving into more complex tertiary flavours. If drinking now, decanting for an hour will help open up the wine's full expression, but cellaring will reveal nebbiolo's legendary ability to transform with time.
