Why do we love this wine?

This rare drop from a McLaren Vale powerhouse is just coming into its prime drinking window now, and wowser, is it singing. From 35+ year old vines, and after 24 months in French and American oak, this drop has it all. Rich, dark plums and bramble berries layered atop sweet cedar and sandalwood, envelop the olfactories with finesse. The palate is equally rewarding, and opens up impeccably in the glass. Pure silk, with dark chocolate melting onto the rich, ripe dark fruit profile. Feel free to try this over a couple of days - it'll reward you greatly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Rare Bird' designation reflects both the exceptional quality of this release and its limited availability from Cape Barren's premium tier. Sourced from 35+ year old vines in McLaren Vale, these mature plantings produce concentrated, complex fruit that forms the foundation of truly distinguished wines. The 'Museum Release' rating indicates this wine has been carefully cellared and is now entering its optimal drinking window, having developed the tertiary flavours and silky texture that only time can create.

The extended maturation in both French and American oak barrels creates a sophisticated interplay of flavours and textures. French oak contributes the refined cedar and sandalwood notes while adding structural tannins, whilst American oak provides the sweet coconut undertones and enhances the wine's full-bodied richness. This dual-oak approach allows the wine to develop complexity whilst maintaining the pure dark fruit expression that McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for.

As a full-bodied, premium Shiraz with significant bottle age, this wine benefits enormously from aeration to unlock its layered complexity. The description notes it 'opens up impeccably in the glass', meaning the dark chocolate, plum, and bramble berry flavours will continue evolving and intensifying with exposure to air. Drinking over 2-3 days allows you to experience the wine's transformation as the tannins soften further and secondary flavours emerge.

The wine's rich, dark fruit profile and full-bodied structure make it ideal for robust dishes that can match its intensity. The dark chocolate and black olive notes suggest excellent pairings with char-grilled red meats, particularly lamb with Mediterranean herbs, or aged beef with mushroom-based sauces. The coconut undertones from American oak also create interesting opportunities with spiced dishes or even dark chocolate desserts for those adventurous enough to try wine with sweets.

The 2020 vintage in McLaren Vale was characterised by excellent growing conditions that produced wines of exceptional concentration and balance. This particular release has earned impressive recognition with a 4.3 Vivino rating and Five Stars from Wine Orbit, indicating it stands among the region's finest expressions. The fact it's described as 'just coming into its prime drinking window' suggests the 2020 vintage has developed beautifully, offering immediate drinking pleasure whilst retaining potential for further cellaring.
