Why do we love this wine?

This rare drop from a McLaren Vale powerhouse is just coming into its prime drinking window now, and wowser, is it singing. From 35+ year old vines, and after 24 months in French and American oak, this drop has it all. Rich, dark plums and bramble berries layered atop sweet cedar and sandalwood, envelop the olfactories with finesse. The palate is equally rewarding, and opens up impeccably in the glass. Pure silk, with dark chocolate melting onto the rich, ripe dark fruit profile. Feel free to try this over a couple of days - it'll reward you greatly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Rare Bird' designation reflects both the exceptional quality of fruit from 35+ year old vines and Cape Barren's selective release strategy. Museum releases are wines held back by the producer beyond typical release schedules, allowing additional bottle development that creates more complex tertiary flavours. This 2020 is now entering its prime drinking window, showcasing the patience and expertise that defines premium McLaren Vale Shiraz production.

The combination of French and American oak creates a sophisticated flavour bridge between fruit and wood elements. French oak contributes the refined cedar and sandalwood notes, while American oak adds subtle vanilla and coconut undertones that complement the dark chocolate characteristics. This extended maturation period allows the oak to fully integrate rather than dominate, creating the 'pure silk' texture that develops beautifully as the wine opens in the glass.

Full-bodied Shiraz from mature vines often contains complex tannin structures and concentrated flavours that benefit from gradual oxidation. As the wine breathes, tight tannins soften and secondary flavours emerge, revealing layers that weren't immediately apparent. The 97-point Wine Orbit rating suggests exceptional concentration and balance, meaning this wine has the structural integrity to evolve positively rather than deteriorate when exposed to air over multiple days.

The rich, full-bodied nature and dark chocolate notes make this ideal for robust dishes like slow-braised lamb shanks, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison. The bramble berry characteristics also pair beautifully with duck confit or mushroom-based dishes that echo the earthy undertones. For cheese, consider aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar or Parmigiano-Reggiano that can stand up to the wine's intensity while complementing its savoury complexity.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing powerful yet elegant Shiraz. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent help maintain acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness, explaining the wine's balance of rich fruit and structural finesse. The black olive notes are particularly characteristic of McLaren Vale Shiraz, reflecting the region's ability to produce wines with both power and savoury complexity that age gracefully.
