Why do we love this wine?

Spoilt for choice of old vine shiraz, this producer captures the intensity of their vineyards in true style. They've built a reputation for wines that are true to McLaren Vale, and the generations of craft that have been invested into the region. There’s deeply bound notes of spicy, chocolatey french oak that complements the pure line of blackcurrant, bramble and licorice. Standing tall now, we can’t wait to see where this will be in many years time.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and ancient soils create perfect conditions for developing the intense, full-bodied character found in this Wild Goose Shiraz. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast allow the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. This terroir, combined with generations of winemaking expertise, produces the deep blackcurrant and bramble flavours that define quality McLaren Vale Shiraz.

The spicy, chocolatey French oak in this Shiraz provides structure and complexity without overwhelming the fruit character. French oak barrels impart more subtle, refined tannins compared to American oak, allowing the pure blackcurrant and licorice notes to shine through. The oak integration creates layers of vanilla and spice that complement the wine's natural bramble fruit, resulting in a harmonious balance between fruit intensity and oak sophistication.

A 95-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and complexity. This score suggests the wine demonstrates perfect balance, intense varietal character, and excellent ageing potential. Wine Orbit's recognition, particularly with their Five Stars award, confirms that Cape Barren has crafted a Shiraz that truly represents the best of McLaren Vale's winemaking tradition.

While this full-bodied Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its rich blackberry and blood plum flavours, it has excellent cellaring potential due to its structure and quality. McLaren Vale Shiraz of this calibre typically develops greater complexity over 5-10 years, with the tannins softening and secondary flavours emerging. The wine's current intensity and balanced oak suggest it will reward patient cellaring, evolving into an even more sophisticated expression.

This rich, full-bodied Shiraz pairs excellently with robust red meats like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game dishes. The wine's blackcurrant and spicy oak flavours complement barbecued meats perfectly, while its full body can stand up to rich, flavourful dishes like braised short ribs or aged hard cheeses. The vanilla and chocolate notes from the French oak also make it an excellent match for dishes featuring herbs like rosemary or thyme.
