This is classic Right Bank Bordeaux with a bit of wow factor. A classic merlot–cabernet sauvignon blend grown on south-facing slopes overlooking the Gironde - which is wine-speak for ripe fruit, balanced structure and plenty of natural charm.

Why do we love this wine?

Sustainably farmed and aged for 10 months in French oak from a handful of carefully selected coopers, which shows in the detail. You’ll find ripe cassis and juicy blueberry up front, followed by violet lift, gentle spice and those cosy oak notes - vanilla, toasted hazelnut, a touch of cocoa - all neatly folded in rather than purely slapped together. The palate’s generous but composed, with enough structure to feel serious and enough freshness to keep things lively. This is Bordeaux that plays beautifully at the dinner table - think roasts, grilled meats, slow-cooked stews - basically anything hearty and comforting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux sits on the Right Bank of the Gironde estuary, where clay-limestone soils and a slightly cooler maritime climate create ideal conditions for Merlot-based blends. This appellation is known for producing more approachable, fruit-forward wines compared to the austere Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon blends, while still maintaining the structural complexity that defines great Bordeaux. The region's elevation and diverse soil types allow winemakers like Château Fontarabie to craft wines with both immediate appeal and ageing potential.

The careful selection of French oak coopers and 10-month maturation period allows this wine to develop layers of complexity without overwhelming the fruit. French oak imparts more subtle, refined flavours compared to American oak - think vanilla, toasted hazelnuts, and cocoa rather than bold vanilla and coconut. This extended but measured oak contact also helps integrate tannins, creating the wine's composed structure while preserving the fresh cassis and blueberry fruit that makes it so approachable now.

This wine's generous palate and savoury complexity make it perfect for hearty, protein-rich dishes that can match its weight and structure. The blackcurrant and cedar notes complement red meats beautifully, while the tobacco undertones enhance slow-cooked dishes like braised lamb shanks or beef bourguignon. The wine's balanced acidity cuts through rich sauces and fatty meats, making it equally suited to grilled steaks, roasted duck, or even mature hard cheeses.

The dual gold medals from Concours Mondial des Féminalise and 70 Millions de Dégustateurs reflect this wine's exceptional balance between accessibility and sophistication. These competitions recognise wines that demonstrate technical excellence while remaining approachable to diverse palates. The sustainable farming practices, careful oak integration, and the winemaker's skill in balancing ripe fruit with structural elements likely impressed judges who were looking for wines that represent excellent value and authentic regional character.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with its generous fruit and well-integrated oak, the 2020 vintage has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5-8 years. The combination of ripe tannins and fresh acidity suggests it will evolve gracefully, with the primary fruit flavours gradually giving way to more tertiary notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs. However, given its current harmony and approachable style, there's no need to wait if you're looking for immediate enjoyment.
