Why do we love this wine?

In mofo history, we have never seen a wine fly out the door quite like this one. No exaggeration, never before has a wine been as loved by the mofo community. This Grand Cru Saint-Emilion is rich and ripe and at a magical point in its life, drinking very, very well. It’s a stunning example of how Bordeaux terroir shines through the merlot grape in all its generosity and finesse, with a touch of cab franc (15%) adding fresh notes to all that fruit. Expect an abundance of plums, vanilla and milk chocolate. Forest floor and herbal undergrowth are hidden softly underneath - sage and oregano, tobacco leaf. Spice ekes in around my edges, with broad, silky tannin riding on a backbone of bright acidity and keen structure. You can rest assured that you are going to be drinking the top-of-the-top of Bordeaux here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grand Cru classification in Saint-Emilion represents the pinnacle of Bordeaux quality, with vineyards subject to rigorous soil and terroir standards that regular appellations don't require. This Château Galius benefits from the Right Bank's clay-limestone soils that are perfectly suited to merlot, allowing the grape to develop exceptional concentration and complexity. The Grand Cru status also mandates lower yields and stricter winemaking protocols, resulting in wines with greater depth and ageing potential than standard Bordeaux offerings.

The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux is considered exceptional due to ideal growing conditions - a warm, dry summer followed by perfectly timed harvest rains that allowed grapes to reach optimal ripeness without losing acidity. For merlot-based wines like this Saint-Emilion, 2020 produced fruit with remarkable concentration and balance, explaining why this wine is described as being at a 'magical point in its life'. The vintage's natural harmony between fruit intensity and structural elements means these wines are drinking beautifully now while still having excellent ageing potential.

The 85% merlot provides the wine's signature plush texture and rich fruit flavours - those abundant plums and chocolate notes that make Saint-Emilion so approachable. The 15% cabernet franc acts as the wine's backbone, contributing fresh herbal notes, structural tannins, and the tobacco leaf complexity that adds sophistication. This classic Right Bank blend creates a wine that's both immediately pleasurable and intellectually engaging, with the cabernet franc preventing the merlot from becoming overly soft or one-dimensional.

The wine's combination of rich fruit, earthy undertones, and medium body makes it incredibly versatile with food. The plum and chocolate notes pair beautifully with duck breast or lamb with rosemary, while the forest floor and herbal elements complement mushroom-based dishes or aged cheeses. The silky tannins and bright acidity also make it excellent with slow-cooked beef dishes where the wine's complexity can match the depth of flavours developed through braising or roasting.

While this 2020 is described as drinking very well now, quality Saint-Emilion Grand Cru wines typically have a drinking window of 15-20 years from vintage. The wine's current approachability suggests it's in its first peak, but the underlying structure and Grand Cru pedigree indicate it will continue evolving beautifully through the 2030s. For optimal enjoyment, consider drinking some bottles now to appreciate the vibrant fruit, while cellaring others to experience how the earthy, herbal complexity will develop and integrate over time.
