Sometimes we get a wine across the tasting bench at mofo HQ that doesn't need a lot of scrutiny. Not because we've passed it up, but because it just nails the stylistic qualities we're looking for. This is one of those wines. Not only exceptional value, this delicious drop shows the black and red fruit forward, lifted style we love, with plenty of structure and acidity all in balance. One of the best-value finds of the year!

Why do we love this wine?

Château Grand Sorillon sits on the renowned Pomerol plateau, covering 5.5 hectares in a single, continuous parcel. The vineyard's clay, gravelly soil holds moisture well, without becoming too sodden - leading to excellent grape growth and consistency. Planted to Merlot, with. some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 40+ year old vineyard produces wines of exceptional quality and complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The estate's location on the prestigious Pomerol plateau provides exceptional terroir with clay and gravelly soils that retain moisture without waterlogging. This unique soil composition, combined with the vineyard's single continuous parcel layout, creates ideal conditions for consistent grape ripening and concentration. The well-draining yet moisture-retentive properties help the 40+ year old vines develop deep root systems, contributing to the wine's complexity and mineral expression.

With vines over 40 years old, Château Grand Sorillon benefits from mature root systems that penetrate deep into the clay-gravel terroir, accessing diverse mineral layers. Older vines naturally produce lower yields but higher quality fruit with more concentrated flavours and better balance. This maturity translates into wines with greater complexity, depth, and the ability to express the unique characteristics of the Pomerol plateau's exceptional terroir.

The medium-bodied profile with cranberry, plum, and woody notes makes this wine versatile for both casual and formal dining. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef bourguignon, or aged cheeses where the wine's structure complements rich proteins without overwhelming them. The Merlot-dominant blend's softer tannins also work well with mushroom-based dishes, duck confit, or even hearty vegetarian fare like ratatouille.

The 'Dangerous Value' rating reflects exceptional quality-to-price ratio that's rare in Bordeaux wines, particularly from the prestigious Pomerol plateau region. This designation suggests the wine delivers complexity and character typically found in much more expensive bottles from the same area. The combination of prime terroir, mature vines, and skilled winemaking creates a wine that punches well above its weight class, making it dangerously easy to drink and buy.

Serve this Bordeaux Supérieur at 16-18°C to showcase its medium-bodied character and fruit-forward profile. While enjoyable now, the 2021 vintage has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5-8 years when stored properly in a cool, dark place. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help open up the woody notes and integrate the tannins, enhancing the cranberry and plum flavours.
