Two words... Grand Cru - this one's from some of the best vineyards in the whole of Bordeaux. Hillside vineyards brushing right up against Saint-Émilion, soaked in southern sunshine, with old vines sunk deep into clay and limestone. Translation: Balance, depth and heaps of natural Bordeaux character.

Why do we love this wine?

Old-vine Bordeaux that delivers richness and energy - polished enough to impress, relaxed enough to enjoy right now. A cracking example of what this corner of Bordeaux does best. The blend leans classic Bordeaux but keeps things interesting: mostly merlot for plushness, backed up by cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon for structure, with a splash of malbec bringing a darker edge. In the glass it pours deep garnet and immediately starts showing the drinker what it's all about - baked cherry, warm blueberry and plum, with savoury hits of earth and truffle drifting through. It’s medium to full-bodied, juicy and generous, but never sloppy. The tannins are rounded and well behaved, freshness keeps everything lifted, and the finish hangs around with a fragrant, savoury flourish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Émilion sits on Bordeaux's Right Bank, where merlot dominates rather than cabernet sauvignon. This creates wines with more immediate charm and plushness compared to the structured, austere Left Bank styles. The old vines at Château Haut-Rocher add concentration and complexity, while the Grand Cru classification ensures strict quality standards. The addition of malbec in this blend is particularly interesting, as it's less common in Bordeaux and adds a darker, more intense character.

2020 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux, marked by a warm, dry growing season that produced concentrated, well-balanced wines. The heat stress encouraged the old vines to dig deeper, concentrating flavours while maintaining freshness. This vintage shows the perfect marriage of ripeness and elegance that makes Bordeaux legendary. The wine's immediate approachability suggests 2020's sunny conditions created optimal phenolic ripeness, allowing for softer tannins without sacrificing structure.

The rounded, well-behaved tannins and generous fruit expression indicate this wine was crafted for earlier enjoyment rather than extended ageing. Modern winemaking techniques and the warm 2020 vintage have created a wine with integrated oak and soft tannins that don't require years to mellow. While it could certainly age gracefully for 8-10 years, its current balance of fruit, earth, and truffle notes makes it perfectly enjoyable today.

The wine's combination of baked cherry and plum with earthy, truffle notes makes it ideal for rich, umami-driven dishes. Think roasted lamb with herbs, duck confit, or aged beef with mushroom sauce. The merlot's plushness handles rich sauces beautifully, while the cabernet franc and sauvignon provide enough structure for grilled meats. Even hearty vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto or eggplant parmigiana would work wonderfully with its savoury complexity.

Old vines produce smaller yields but more concentrated fruit, as their deep root systems access nutrients and water that younger vines cannot reach. This results in grapes with more complex flavour compounds and better natural balance between sugar, acid, and tannins. The 90-point ratings from both James Suckling and Robert Parker Wine Advocate reflect this concentration and complexity. Old vines also tend to be more resistant to vintage variation, helping maintain consistent quality year after year.
