Two words... Grand Cru - this one's from some of the best vineyards in the whole of Bordeaux. Hillside vineyards brushing right up against Saint-Émilion, soaked in southern sunshine, with old vines sunk deep into clay and limestone. Translation: Balance, depth and heaps of natural Bordeaux character.

Why do we love this wine?

Old-vine Bordeaux that delivers richness and energy - polished enough to impress, relaxed enough to enjoy right now. A cracking example of what this corner of Bordeaux does best. The blend leans classic Bordeaux but keeps things interesting: mostly merlot for plushness, backed up by cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon for structure, with a splash of malbec bringing a darker edge. In the glass it pours deep garnet and immediately starts showing the drinker what it's all about - baked cherry, warm blueberry and plum, with savoury hits of earth and truffle drifting through. It’s medium to full-bodied, juicy and generous, but never sloppy. The tannins are rounded and well behaved, freshness keeps everything lifted, and the finish hangs around with a fragrant, savoury flourish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Émilion sits on Bordeaux's Right Bank, where merlot thrives in the clay-limestone soils, creating wines with more immediate appeal than the cabernet sauvignon-dominant Left Bank. This Château Haut-Rocher showcases the region's signature plushness through its merlot-led blend, while the old vines contribute concentrated flavours and natural balance. The Grand Cru classification ensures strict quality standards, making it a step above basic Saint-Émilion.

While malbec isn't traditional in Bordeaux blends, progressive producers like Château Haut-Rocher use small amounts to add colour intensity and a darker, more brooding character. This technique reflects modern winemaking's flexibility within appellation rules, where up to 10% of 'other varieties' can enhance the classic merlot-cabernet blend. The malbec here provides that 'darker edge' mentioned in the tasting notes, complementing rather than overwhelming the traditional Bordeaux profile.

Vines typically need 20-25 years to develop deep root systems that access diverse soil layers and minerals, naturally limiting yields while concentrating flavours. Old-vine fruit tends to produce wines with greater complexity, better natural balance, and enhanced aging potential. In this Saint-Émilion, the old vines contribute to the wine's richness and energy, delivering concentrated fruit flavours alongside the earthy, truffle-like complexity that comes from mature vineyard sites.

The wine's medium to full body and savoury earthiness make it ideal for classic French cuisine like duck confit, lamb with herbs, or aged cheeses. The rounded tannins and generous fruit also complement grilled meats, mushroom-based dishes, and rich pasta with truffle or meat sauces. The wine's immediate drinkability means it won't overpower lighter fare like roasted chicken or pork tenderloin with berry reductions.

This wine strikes the perfect balance for both approaches - it's polished enough to impress immediately while having the structure for medium-term aging. The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux was excellent, producing wines with good acidity and well-integrated tannins that suggest 8-12 years of aging potential. However, the description emphasises it's 'relaxed enough to enjoy right now', meaning you won't miss out by opening it young, especially if you appreciate fresh, vibrant fruit flavours.
