We’re getting pretty good at finding exceptional Bordeaux at unbelievable pricing. Humble, I know. But sometimes it’s good to give yourself a little pat on the back. We think we earned it with this one.

Why do we love this wine?

We’re getting pretty good at finding exceptional Bordeaux at unbelievable pricing. Humble, I know. But sometimes it’s good to give yourself a little pat on the back. We think we earned it with this one. It’s Saint-Emilion Grand Cru composed of 85% merlot and 15% cab franc that’s hitting all the right notes. And we’re not the only ones that feel that way. A score of 4.2 on Vivino and 96 points with a gold medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards seem to back up our assessment. The Decanter review below goes into a bit more detail for those remaining unconvinced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Emilion sits on Bordeaux's Right Bank, where merlot thrives in clay-limestone soils rather than the cabernet sauvignon-dominant Left Bank. This Grand Cru designation means the vineyard meets strict quality standards including lower yields and longer ageing requirements. The 85% merlot blend creates a more approachable, fruit-forward style compared to the structured, tannic wines from appellations like Médoc.

This medium-bodied Saint-Emilion is already showing beautifully but has excellent ageing potential through 2030-2035. The merlot-dominant blend means it's more approachable young than cabernet sauvignon-heavy Bordeaux, while the 15% cabernet franc adds structure for long-term development. The leather and spicebox notes will integrate further, developing tertiary flavours of tobacco, earth, and dried fruits over the next decade.

The cranberry and leather notes make this ideal for game meats like duck breast or venison, where the wine's earthiness complements rich, gamey flavours. The spicebox character pairs beautifully with herb-crusted lamb or beef bourguignon. For cheese, try aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino, whose nutty complexity matches the wine's savoury profile without overwhelming the medium body.

The 96 points from Decanter World Wine Awards and 90 points from James Suckling reflect exceptional winemaking in a challenging vintage. 2019 was marked by early heat followed by ideal September conditions, allowing skilled producers to craft wines with both power and elegance. The Grand Cru classification ensures rigorous vineyard management, while the producer's careful blend of merlot and cabernet franc showcases the terroir's potential.

Serve at 16-18°C to showcase the cranberry fruit while allowing the leather and spice notes to emerge properly. Decant for 1-2 hours before serving to soften any youthful tannins and integrate the flavours - the medium body means it doesn't need the extended aeration of heavier Bordeaux. Young Saint-Emilion benefits from this breathing time to reveal its full aromatic complexity and textured mouthfeel.
