This is Haut-Médoc doing what it does best - calm, confident and quietly impressive. From the first swirl it's clear that you're dealing with a pretty special wine. Everything is smooth, concentrated and deeply inviting, no sharp edges, no rush, just quality and drinkability.

Why do we love this wine?

It smells like a wine that knows it’s got pedigree, cassis, plum and blackcurrant are overt but don't dominate the wine. The palate backs it up with ease. Refined currant fruit sits at the core, wrapped in cedary notes and carried by tannins that are perfectly pitched and beautifully behaved. Oak plays a supporting role only - subtle, integrated, and stretching the finish rather than stealing the spotlight. It’s powerful without flexing, structured without being stiff, and elegant the whole way through. Drinking well now if you’re impatient, but built to cruise comfortably in the cellar if you’ve got the discipline. A proper class act from a standout vintage - one for lovers of serious Bordeaux that still remember it’s actually meant to be enjoyable.

Alluring sweet cassis, plum and blackcurrant aromas with a mellow texture and poised tannins beautifully bonded to refined currant and cedar fruit core. The subtle use of oak sits elegantly on the lingering finish. A class act.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as exceptional in Bordeaux, with ideal growing conditions producing wines of remarkable concentration and balance. This Château Malescasse exemplifies the vintage's success, earning an outstanding 97 points from Decanter and a Platinum award. The year delivered perfectly ripe fruit with natural acidity, allowing producers to craft wines that are both powerful and elegant, with tannins that integrate beautifully rather than overwhelming the palate.

While this Haut-Médoc is drinking beautifully now for those who can't wait, its structured tannins and balanced acidity suggest excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years or more. The wine's refined fruit core and integrated oak indicate it will develop greater complexity with time, revealing secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth. For optimal enjoyment, consider cellaring until 2027-2030, though it will continue to evolve gracefully well into the 2030s.

The wine's medium body and refined tannin structure make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with red meats and rich, savoury dishes. Classic pairings include roasted lamb with herbs, beef bourguignon, or aged hard cheeses like Comté. The cassis and blackcurrant flavours complement game birds beautifully, while the cedary notes enhance dishes with earthy mushrooms or truffle elements.

Château Malescasse represents excellent value within the Haut-Médoc appellation, offering the elegance and structure associated with Left Bank Bordeaux at a more accessible price point than famous neighbours. The estate focuses on expressing terroir rather than power alone, crafting wines that showcase the refined character possible in this appellation. This approach has earned recognition from critics, with the 2020 vintage demonstrating that quality Haut-Médoc can rival more prestigious appellations.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics and refined tannins to express fully. Decanting 1-2 hours before serving will help integrate the wine's components and allow the cassis and plum characteristics to open beautifully. Young bottles benefit most from decanting, while older vintages may only need 30 minutes of breathing time to avoid losing delicate aromatics that develop with age.
