This is Haut-Médoc doing what it does best - calm, confident and quietly impressive. From the first swirl it's clear that you're dealing with a pretty special wine. Everything is smooth, concentrated and deeply inviting, no sharp edges, no rush, just quality and drinkability.

Why do we love this wine?

It smells like a wine that knows it’s got pedigree, cassis, plum and blackcurrant are overt but don't dominate the wine. The palate backs it up with ease. Refined currant fruit sits at the core, wrapped in cedary notes and carried by tannins that are perfectly pitched and beautifully behaved. Oak plays a supporting role only - subtle, integrated, and stretching the finish rather than stealing the spotlight. It’s powerful without flexing, structured without being stiff, and elegant the whole way through. Drinking well now if you’re impatient, but built to cruise comfortably in the cellar if you’ve got the discipline. A proper class act from a standout vintage - one for lovers of serious Bordeaux that still remember it’s actually meant to be enjoyable.

Alluring sweet cassis, plum and blackcurrant aromas with a mellow texture and poised tannins beautifully bonded to refined currant and cedar fruit core. The subtle use of oak sits elegantly on the lingering finish. A class act.

Frequently Asked Questions

Haut-Médoc represents the southern extension of the famous Médoc peninsula, where Château Malescasse benefits from gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage for Merlot-based blends. This appellation sits between the prestigious communes like Margaux and Saint-Julien, offering exceptional value while maintaining the classic Left Bank style. The 2020 vintage particularly showcases the region's ability to produce wines with both power and elegance, earning recognition with a remarkable 97 points from Decanter.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to allow the blackcurrant and herbaceous notes to shine through without overwhelming the palate. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to soften any tannins and enhance the aromatic complexity typical of quality Merlot blends. The medium body makes it versatile for food pairing - it won't overpower lighter dishes but has enough structure to complement heartier fare like roasted lamb or aged cheeses.

The herbaceous notes indicate this Bordeaux maintains the classic Left Bank character where Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc likely plays a supporting role to the dominant Merlot. These green, earthy undertones suggest the grapes achieved optimal ripeness while retaining freshness - a hallmark of the excellent 2020 vintage in Bordeaux. This herbaceous quality adds complexity and prevents the wine from being overly fruit-forward, creating a more sophisticated drinking experience that will evolve beautifully with age.

The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as exceptional in Bordeaux, with many critics comparing it to legendary years like 2009 and 2010. The growing season featured ideal conditions with a warm, dry summer that allowed for perfect ripening, followed by harvest under optimal weather. This Château Malescasse's impressive 97-point Decanter rating and Platinum award reflect the vintage's quality, suggesting this wine captures the concentrated fruit and balanced structure that made 2020 so celebrated across the region.

Quality Haut-Médoc wines from excellent vintages like 2020 typically develop beautifully over 10-15 years, with this Château Malescasse likely reaching its peak around 2028-2032. The Merlot blend's medium body suggests it will be approachable in its youth while having enough structure to reward patience. The herbaceous and blackcurrant profile will evolve into more complex secondary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth, while the tannins integrate to create a silky texture that exemplifies mature Bordeaux.
