Why do we love this wine?

This Bordeaux hails from the Margaux appellation, a cab-merlot blend with a touch of cab franc and a whole lotta charm. With four scores of 95 points, as well as 91 points from James Suckling, it’s an awesome expression of the area and anyone who loves Margaux will love this.

This vino is fresh and elegant, says Decanter, with “impressive tannins”, “no overt oak” and “a deluge of plum fruits”. It’s juicy, full of red and black fruits and will go down an absolute treat with any of your favourite meats. Grab it for a special dinner with a special someone or your not so special family. It’ll please ’em all.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

Winemaker: Karin Berneleau

Although her family owns Château Mongravey in Margaux and Château de Braude in the Haut-Médoc, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that the pull of winemaking in her blood was too strong for Karin Berneleau. Around the turn of the century, Karin left her prior life of physiotherapy, osteopathy and physical education and returned to serve her family estates. Her energy and precision are now evident in the more recent successes of the wines. We can only imagine the grapes are being whipped into shape as only a phys ed teacher can.

A delicate, perfumed nose starts this off, leading to a fresh and lithe palate full of attractive fruit and tiny, firm tannins. Nothing is done to excess, resulting in a decent wine with evident Margaux character.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2014 vintage in Margaux was exceptional, producing wines with remarkable balance and ageing potential. This Château Mongravey showcases the vintage's hallmark elegance with impressive tannin structure that allows the fruit to shine without heavy oak influence. The four 95-point scores from respected critics demonstrate how well this estate captured the vintage's potential, creating a wine that exemplifies why 2014 is considered one of Bordeaux's modern classic years.

Karin Berneleau's unique journey from physiotherapy and physical education to winemaking brings a precision-focused approach to Château Mongravey. Her background in body mechanics and rehabilitation translates into meticulous attention to vine health and grape development. Since taking over in the early 2000s, her methodical approach has elevated the estate's reputation, resulting in wines like this 2014 that show remarkable structural integrity and balance.

This wine's textured, savoury profile and impressive tannin structure make it ideal for rich meat dishes like roasted lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye, or duck confit. The plum and blackcurrant flavours complement game meats beautifully, while the wine's elegance won't overpower dishes like beef wellington or aged hard cheeses. The lack of overt oak means it pairs well with dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or truffle-based sauces.

Château Mongravey represents excellent value within the prestigious Margaux appellation, delivering the region's signature elegance and finesse at a more accessible level than the famous first growths. The wine captures Margaux's characteristic perfumed aromatics and silky tannins while maintaining the structured backbone typical of quality Left Bank Bordeaux. Its cabernet-merlot blend with cabernet franc adds complexity that's representative of the appellation's diverse terroir.

While already showing beautifully now with its fresh fruit character and integrated tannins, this 2014 has the structure to develop gracefully for another 8-12 years. The impressive tannin backbone mentioned by critics will continue to soften, allowing more complex secondary flavours to emerge. For immediate enjoyment, decant for an hour to let the wine breathe, or cellar it to experience how Margaux wines evolve from fruit-forward youth to the complex, earthy elegance they're renowned for.
