Why do we love this wine?

This Bordeaux hails from the Margaux appellation, a cab-merlot blend with a touch of cab franc and a whole lotta charm. With four scores of 95 points, as well as 91 points from James Suckling, it’s an awesome expression of the area and anyone who loves Margaux will love this.

This vino is fresh and elegant, says Decanter, with “impressive tannins”, “no overt oak” and “a deluge of plum fruits”. It’s juicy, full of red and black fruits and will go down an absolute treat with any of your favourite meats. Grab it for a special dinner with a special someone or your not so special family. It’ll please ’em all.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

Winemaker: Karin Berneleau

Although her family owns Château Mongravey in Margaux and Château de Braude in the Haut-Médoc, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that the pull of winemaking in her blood was too strong for Karin Berneleau. Around the turn of the century, Karin left her prior life of physiotherapy, osteopathy and physical education and returned to serve her family estates. Her energy and precision are now evident in the more recent successes of the wines. We can only imagine the grapes are being whipped into shape as only a phys ed teacher can.

A delicate, perfumed nose starts this off, leading to a fresh and lithe palate full of attractive fruit and tiny, firm tannins. Nothing is done to excess, resulting in a decent wine with evident Margaux character.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2014 Château Mongravey earned four separate 95-point scores from respected critics because it perfectly captures Margaux's signature elegance while delivering impressive depth. The wine showcases the appellation's renowned ability to produce Cabernet Sauvignon-based blends that are both powerful and refined, with what Decanter describes as 'impressive tannins' balanced by fresh acidity. This vintage represents the sweet spot where Margaux's gravelly soils and maritime climate create wines of exceptional finesse and longevity.

Karin Berneleau's transition from physiotherapy and physical education to winemaking brings a unique precision and energy to Château Mongravey that's evident in the wine's structure. Her scientific background in understanding body mechanics translates beautifully to understanding vine health and grape development, while her teaching experience ensures meticulous attention to detail in the cellar. Since taking over in the early 2000s, her hands-on approach has elevated the estate's reputation, proving that diverse professional backgrounds can bring fresh perspectives to traditional winemaking.

This textured, savoury Margaux with its plum and blackcurrant flavours is a natural match for red meats, particularly lamb with herbs de Provence or beef wellington where the wine's elegant tannins complement rich, complex flavours. The wine's Bordeaux blend structure also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Roquefort or Comté, where the fruit intensity balances the cheese's saltiness. For a more adventurous pairing, try it with duck confit or even dark chocolate desserts, as the wine's full body and berry notes create harmonious flavour bridges.

The 2014 vintage in Bordeaux was initially underestimated but has proven to be excellent for wines with proper terroir expression, like this Margaux. While not as immediately showy as some warmer years, 2014 produced wines with beautiful balance, fresh acidity, and elegant structure that age gracefully. The cooler growing conditions allowed for extended hang time, resulting in wines with more nuanced flavour development and natural acidity - qualities that are particularly prized in Margaux where finesse trumps power.

This 2014 Margaux is drinking beautifully now, showing the developed complexity that makes Bordeaux so rewarding after a decade of ageing. However, with its impressive tannin structure and high critic scores, it has the backbone to continue evolving for another 10-15 years in proper storage conditions. The wine is currently in its prime drinking window where the fruit, tannins, and secondary flavours are perfectly integrated, but patient collectors will be rewarded with even more tertiary complexity developing through the 2030s.
