Why do we love this wine?

This Bordeaux hails from the Margaux appellation, a cab-merlot blend with a touch of cab franc and a whole lotta charm. With four scores of 95 points, as well as 91 points from James Suckling, it’s an awesome expression of the area and anyone who loves Margaux will love this.

This vino is fresh and elegant, says Decanter, with “impressive tannins”, “no overt oak” and “a deluge of plum fruits”. It’s juicy, full of red and black fruits and will go down an absolute treat with any of your favourite meats. Grab it for a special dinner with a special someone or your not so special family. It’ll please ’em all.

Part of our Women in Wine Collection

We are committed to ALWAYS having wines available that are made by women. In an industry that’s still dominated by men, we believe in celebrating the incredible work women are doing. Here’s to our Women in Wine!

Winemaker: Karin Berneleau

Although her family owns Château Mongravey in Margaux and Château de Braude in the Haut-Médoc, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that the pull of winemaking in her blood was too strong for Karin Berneleau. Around the turn of the century, Karin left her prior life of physiotherapy, osteopathy and physical education and returned to serve her family estates. Her energy and precision are now evident in the more recent successes of the wines. We can only imagine the grapes are being whipped into shape as only a phys ed teacher can.

A delicate, perfumed nose starts this off, leading to a fresh and lithe palate full of attractive fruit and tiny, firm tannins. Nothing is done to excess, resulting in a decent wine with evident Margaux character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaux is considered the most elegant and perfumed of Bordeaux's Left Bank appellations, known for producing wines with exceptional finesse rather than power. This Château Mongravey showcases classic Margaux characteristics with its fresh elegance and impressive tannin structure, while the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc creates complexity without heavy oak influence. The terroir's gravelly soils contribute to the wine's refined mineral backbone and ability to express pure fruit flavours.

As a full-bodied Bordeaux blend, this wine benefits from decanting 1-2 hours before serving to allow the tannins to soften and the complex aromatics to develop. Serve at 16-18°C in large Bordeaux glasses to maximise the wine's elegant profile. The plum and blackcurrant flavours pair beautifully with red meats like lamb, beef or duck, while the wine's savoury complexity also complements aged cheeses and mushroom-based dishes.

The 2014 vintage in Bordeaux was initially underrated but has proven to be excellent for age-worthy wines, particularly on the Left Bank where Margaux is located. Cool, wet conditions early in the season were followed by a warm, dry finish, allowing grapes to achieve perfect ripeness while retaining natural acidity. This vintage produces wines with great balance and longevity - the four 95-point scores this wine received demonstrate how well 2014 Margaux has developed and why it's now recognised as a standout year.

When critics mention 'no overt oak', they're highlighting that the winemaking allows the fruit and terroir to shine rather than being dominated by vanilla, spice or toast flavours from barrel ageing. This approach is increasingly favoured in premium Bordeaux, where the focus is on expressing the vineyard's character rather than masking it with heavy oak treatment. The result is a more elegant, food-friendly wine where the natural plum and berry flavours take centre stage, supported by subtle oak integration that adds structure without overwhelming the palate.

Karin Berneleau's transition from physiotherapy and physical education to winemaking in the early 2000s brought fresh perspective and precision to her family's estates. Her background in physical therapy and sports science likely contributes to her methodical approach to viticulture and her understanding of how different elements work together harmoniously. Since taking over, the wines have shown marked improvement in quality and recognition, demonstrating how diverse professional backgrounds can enhance traditional winemaking when combined with passion and attention to detail.
