A commanding left bank Bordeaux, aged into an unbelievable drinking window. Classically dark fruited, there's a strong tannin structure, but a good stint in the cellar has softened the edges of this wine and created that silkiness that makes aged Bordeaux such a pleasure to drink.

Why do we love this wine?

Hefty yet harmonious. By Bordeaux standards, this is a big wine - powerful tannin, subtle oak spice and a structure that has developed into the real backbone of this wine. A good period in the cellar has done absolute wonders for this wine, soft and silky, elegant even, despite the density of fruit. All elements of this wine are singing in perfect harmony, this could go further in the cellar for sure, but we think it's sitting in a really special spot right now. You can't rush perfection, that's true, but don't let it pass you by either...

Frequently Asked Questions

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost Left Bank appellation in Bordeaux, known for producing some of the most structured and age-worthy wines in the region. The cooler climate and clay-limestone soils create wines with firmer tannins and higher acidity than neighbouring Pauillac or Saint-Julien. This Château Tour Haut Vignoble exemplifies the appellation's character with its powerful backbone and harmonious development after proper cellaring.

The 2016 vintage was exceptional across Bordeaux, producing wines with excellent structure and aging potential. This Saint-Estèphe has transformed beautifully over the years - what started as a hefty, tannic wine has evolved into something soft, silky and elegant whilst maintaining its impressive density. The extended cellar time has allowed the powerful tannins to integrate seamlessly with the fruit, creating perfect harmony between all elements.

The wine's textured, savoury profile with notes of dark chocolate, raspberry and tobacco makes it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes. Think slow-braised beef cheeks, lamb shanks with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano. The tobacco notes particularly complement grilled meats with herb crusts, whilst the dark chocolate undertones pair beautifully with dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or dark berry reductions.

This wine is currently in a beautiful drinking window where all elements are singing in perfect harmony. Whilst it certainly has the structure to continue developing for several more years, it's reached that special sweet spot where the tannins have softened without losing the wine's impressive backbone. The description suggests it's at peak enjoyment now - sometimes the perfect moment shouldn't be missed in pursuit of further aging.

A 4.1 rating on Vivino places this wine in the 'very good' category, reflecting consistent appreciation from a broad range of wine drinkers. For a Saint-Estèphe from a lesser-known château, this rating suggests excellent value and quality that punches above its weight class. The rating indicates the wine successfully balances accessibility with complexity, appealing to both casual drinkers and serious wine enthusiasts who recognise its proper Bordeaux character.
