Why do we love this wine?

There's nothing mistaking a Chateau Yaldara shiraz. They're rich, they're bold, they're bursting with dark fruits, chocolate and a dash of vanilla and they've got more structure than a bridge. Suffice to say it's a great day in the Mofo office when we can get our hands on a prestige batch of their best and deliver it at a silly price. Sam Kim gave this 2020 number 96pts and raved about its gorgeous expression, mouth-filling palate and fine-grained tannins. And Wine Pilot's Ray Jordan gave it 95pts and dubbed it perfectly pulled together and with perfumed aromatics. With more than a decade left in the tank this is one breath-taking Barossa drop that deserves a place at the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Liebich Shiraz represents Chateau Yaldara's prestige tier, crafted from old vines that naturally concentrate flavours and reduce yields. The combination of single vineyard sourcing and traditional Barossa winemaking techniques creates exceptional depth and complexity. The wine's impressive critic scores of 94-96 points reflect its superior quality, with reviewers praising its perfect balance of power and elegance that distinguishes it from standard regional offerings.

With more than a decade of cellaring potential ahead, this wine is built for the long haul thanks to its full-bodied structure and fine-grained tannins. The 2020 vintage benefits from excellent growing conditions, and the old vine fruit provides natural acidity and tannin backbone essential for ageing. As it matures, expect the bold dark fruit flavours to integrate further with the oak, developing secondary notes of leather, earth, and spice while maintaining its core intensity.

The wine's rich, chocolatey profile and robust tannin structure make it perfect for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked braised meats. The tobacco and oaky notes complement barbecued foods beautifully, while the blackberry fruit can handle strong flavours like aged cheeses or game meats. Its full-bodied nature means it won't be overwhelmed by rich sauces or bold spices, making it ideal for winter comfort foods.

Old vines, typically 30+ years old, produce smaller yields but more concentrated, complex fruit due to their deep, established root systems. These mature vines access deeper soil nutrients and water sources, creating grapes with greater flavour intensity and natural balance. In the Barossa Valley's ancient soils, old vine Shiraz develops distinctive regional character and the structural complexity that allows wines like this to age gracefully for decades while maintaining their fruit integrity.

The 94-96 point ratings reflect the wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse, with critics specifically praising its 'gorgeous expression' and 'perfectly pulled together' character. Single vineyard sourcing ensures consistency and terroir expression, while the old vine fruit provides natural concentration without heaviness. The fine-grained tannins and mouth-filling palate demonstrate masterful winemaking that captures the essence of premium Barossa Shiraz while maintaining elegance and drinkability.
