Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Dried red fruits that almost dip into candied sweets at times. The worry with ageing wine is that the fruit can dip out of it and the tertiary aromatics and characteristics take over - here, though, everything is in balance. Cassis and redcurrant give way to tomato leaf and earth then cedar and cigar box. The combination is so classically Bordeaux in both it's flavour profile but also its durability and obvious capacity to last. Drink this now and enjoy or, for the patient among you, lay it down a few more years and see what this neat little wine evolves into.

Smoke, graphite, plum, rose petals, mint, red cherry, licorice and spices meld together in the 2014 Clos Marsalette. A wine of real personality and character, the 2014 offers outstanding quality for the money. Smoky, savory notes add the final layers of nuance on the juicy, Merlot-driven finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pessac-Léognan is part of the prestigious Graves region on Bordeaux's Left Bank, known for its gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage and heat retention. This terroir creates wines with distinctive mineral complexity and elegant structure, often showing more finesse than the powerful Médoc appellations. The region's proximity to Bordeaux city and its cooler microclimate contributes to the wine's refined balance of fruit and earthy characteristics.

This 2014 is already showing beautiful tertiary development at 10 years old, indicating excellent ageing potential. Quality Pessac-Léognan wines typically peak between 15-25 years, so this bottle could easily evolve for another 5-10 years. The wine's current balance of fruit and secondary characteristics suggests it's entering its optimal drinking window, making it perfect for enjoying now or holding for further complexity.

The wine's rich cassis and redcurrant flavours, combined with earthy undertones and cedar notes, make it ideal for roasted red meats like lamb or beef. The tomato leaf characteristics pair beautifully with herb-crusted dishes, while the wine's structure can handle rich, aged cheeses. Classic French preparations like coq au vin or duck confit would complement the wine's Bordeaux heritage perfectly.

The candied fruit notes suggest the wine has developed concentrated, jammy characteristics through proper cellaring, where the primary fruit has evolved into more complex, preserved fruit flavours. This is a positive sign in aged Bordeaux, indicating the wine retained its fruit integrity while developing tertiary complexity. It shows the 2014 vintage's natural ripeness and the producer's skilled winemaking in achieving this balanced evolution.

The consistent 90-point ratings reflect the wine's exceptional balance between fruit preservation and tertiary development after a decade of ageing. Professional critics recognise the classic Bordeaux profile - the seamless integration of cassis, earth, cedar and cigar box notes that define quality Left Bank wines. The wine's demonstrated ageing capacity and current drinking pleasure justify this premium scoring, particularly for a producer like Clos Marsalette.
