This is majestic Barossa shiraz, firing on all cylinders. One of the greatest wines from one of the greatest sub-regions in the country. Immediate allure for the impatient among us, decades of cellaring potential for those with monk-like discipline. Either way, you're winning. Power and restraint doing a perfectly choreographed dance.

Why do we love this wine?

The bouquet is immediately expressive yet refined - ripe blackberry, mulberry and black cherry woven together with freshly cracked black pepper, cedar, star anise and dark cocoa. Roasted coffee, graphite and a hint of violets add even more intrigue, suggesting this wine's got both grunt and grace in spades. Then the palate hits, and bloody hell, what a palate. Wave upon wave of concentrated, luxurious black fruits - blackberry compote, cassis, plum - tempered by savoury spice, cured meats and that classic graphite minerality. Dark chocolate, espresso bean and fine French oak bring texture and gravitas that make you sit up and pay attention. The tannins are supple yet authoritative, shaping everything into a defined, architectural frame that's built to last. This is commanding Barossa shiraz at its absolute finest. A total class act.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Maranaga Shiraz showcases the sophisticated side of Barossa with its remarkable balance of power and elegance. While many Barossa Shiraz wines can be overwhelmingly bold, this 2018 vintage demonstrates exceptional restraint through its supple yet authoritative tannin structure and complex layering of savoury elements like graphite minerality and cured meats. The single vineyard sourcing allows for precise expression of terroir, resulting in what critics have recognised with scores of 97-98 points for its architectural framework and long-term ageing potential.

Given the wine's commanding structure and authoritative tannins, this 2018 Shiraz is built for extended cellaring of 15-20 years or more. The concentrated black fruit core and fine French oak integration suggest it will continue developing complexity through the 2030s, with the graphite minerality and savoury spice elements becoming more pronounced over time. The supple yet firm tannin structure indicates it's already approachable now but will reward patience as the various flavour components marry and evolve into even greater harmony.

The wine's rich concentration of blackberry compote and cassis, combined with savoury notes of cured meats and dark chocolate, makes it ideal for robust dishes like slow-braised beef short ribs or grilled lamb with rosemary. The graphite minerality and black pepper spice also complement game meats beautifully, while the espresso and dark cocoa elements create stunning matches with aged hard cheeses or dark chocolate desserts. The wine's architectural tannin structure can stand up to bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

The exceptional 97-98 point ratings reflect this Shiraz's rare combination of concentration and finesse that defines world-class winemaking. Critics have recognised how the wine achieves both 'grunt and grace' - delivering the powerful black fruit intensity expected from premium Barossa Shiraz while maintaining elegant restraint through its refined bouquet and sophisticated tannin management. The complex interplay of primary fruit, secondary spice development, and tertiary oak integration demonstrates masterful vineyard selection and winemaking technique that elevates it above typical regional examples.

Serve this Shiraz at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics to fully express while maintaining the wine's structural integrity. Given its concentrated nature and supple tannins, decanting 1-2 hours before serving will help open up the intricate layers of blackberry, cedar, and graphite minerality. The wine's architectural framework means it can handle extended aeration, which will enhance the integration between the dark fruit core and the sophisticated spice and oak elements, allowing the violet and star anise notes to emerge more prominently.
