From the incredibly talented and experienced Jean-Baptiste Bachevillier comes another exceptional vintage of Beaujolais Villages. Delightfully bright and punchy, with crunchy red and blue fruits on the fore-palate, and a line of clean mineral acidity that carries the delectable fruit through to a long finish. This is a hard one to put down!

Why do we love this wine?

When young Beaujolais native Jean-Baptiste is asked what influences his winemaking, the response is simple: “passion guides me”. He boasts an illustrious career, galavanting around the globe doing vintages from Australia’s McLaren Vale (Coriole) to USA’s Sonoma (Chalk Hill), and all over Europe (including England) and with famous French producers, such as in Northern Rhone (Yves Cuilleron). Quite a curated apprenticeship, which ultimately lead to an insanely ambitious dream being realised. A rare opportunity to acquire the Domaine du Mont Joly, in Beaujolais. With these ancient granite soils, and 2.5 hectares of vines, it’s all about gamay and the unearthing of vast terroirs in Beaujolais-Villages. Beaujolais that shows this intensity is a wondrous wine. With a deep nose that offers juicy black cherries, bramble and ripe plum, this is quite concentrated with chunkier upfront tannins that taper into a silky ‘peacock feather’ shaped finish. This is all about exuberance, yet with an effortlessness feeling. Wow

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the intensity and concentration that comes from ancient granite soils and passionate winemaking by Jean-Baptiste, who trained globally before returning to Beaujolais. Unlike lighter, more commercial Beaujolais, this offers deeper fruit concentration with black cherries and plum, plus more structured tannins that create a 'peacock feather' shaped finish - demonstrating the serious potential of well-made Beaujolais-Villages.

Jean-Baptiste's global apprenticeship across Australia's McLaren Vale, California's Sonoma, and prestigious French regions like Northern Rhone has clearly informed his approach to Gamay. His exposure to different winemaking philosophies and terroirs allows him to extract maximum expression from his 2.5 hectares, creating a Beaujolais with unusual depth and structure while maintaining the grape's natural exuberance.

The wine's medium body and earthy, savoury character with raspberry and redcurrant notes make it incredibly food-friendly. Try it with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses where the structured tannins can complement rich textures. The granite-driven minerality also pairs beautifully with charcuterie or herb-crusted lamb, while the fruit intensity can handle spiced dishes.

As a relatively new domaine with Jean-Baptiste having recently acquired this rare property, the 2023 vintage represents his vision coming to fruition on these ancient granite soils. The concentrated fruit character and structured tannins suggest excellent growing conditions, allowing him to showcase the terroir's potential. This vintage demonstrates how serious, terroir-driven Beaujolais can compete with more prestigious Burgundian appellations.

Serve slightly chilled at 14-16°C to highlight the fresh fruit and granite minerality while softening the upfront tannins. While delicious now, the concentrated structure suggests this wine will develop beautifully over 3-5 years, with the tannins integrating further and secondary earthy notes emerging. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the deep nose of black cherries and bramble.
