This is Reserve shiraz, only made in the best years and in tiny quantities. You’ll find layers of dark fruit - plum, blackberry and cherry compote - with spice, dark chocolate, earthy notes and a savoury edge that speaks to both the old vines and McLaren Vale itself. It’s full-bodied but not clumsy, plush but structured, with tannins that are firm yet polished. The finish is long and layered, the kind that makes you pause before you even think about the next sip and just take a moment to enjoy yourself.

Why do we love this wine?

Some of the fruit here comes off a McLaren Vale vineyard planted back in 1910 - gnarly old bush vines that have been tended by three generations of the same family. It’s a patch of dirt with deep clay soils, east-west rows to shield the fruit from the harsh summer sun, and roots that stretch forever thanks to access to good water. Translation: Vines that dig deep and deliver concentration, balance and serious power. This wine has helped put this producer firmly on the map - you'll know what we mean as soon as you see the label. It’s approachable enough to drink young if you can’t wait, but built for the cellar if you’ve got patience. Either way, it’s a reserve-level shiraz with history in its bones and proof in the pudding.

Frequently Asked Questions

The fruit comes from a remarkable McLaren Vale vineyard planted in 1910, featuring century-old bush vines that have been lovingly maintained by three generations of the same family. These ancient vines have developed extensive root systems that tap into deep clay soils and reliable water sources, allowing them to produce fruit with exceptional concentration and natural balance. The east-west row orientation cleverly protects the grapes from McLaren Vale's intense summer heat, ensuring optimal ripening conditions.

While this wine is approachable enough to enjoy now if you're impatient, it's built with the structure and concentration to reward cellaring for many years to come. McLaren Vale Shiraz from quality producers like Fox Creek typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this 2016 is entering its prime drinking window. The deep clay soils and old vine fruit provide the tannin backbone and flavour complexity that will continue evolving beautifully through the 2020s and beyond.

The rich blood plum, chocolate, and raspberry flavours make this wine perfect for hearty red meat dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, or venison with berry sauces. The full-bodied palate weight and McLaren Vale's characteristic warmth also complement aged hard cheeses, dark chocolate desserts, and Mediterranean dishes with herbs like rosemary and thyme. The wine's concentration can stand up to bold flavours without being overwhelmed.

The exceptional 96-point score from Huon Hooke reflects the wine's perfect balance of power and elegance that comes from century-old vines and expert winemaking. McLaren Vale's unique terroir, combined with Fox Creek's reserve-level selection process, creates wines with remarkable depth and complexity that critics recognise as benchmark examples of Australian Shiraz. The 4.4 Vivino rating also shows that everyday wine lovers appreciate its approachable yet sophisticated character.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast, creates perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop rich fruit flavours while retaining natural acidity. The region's diverse soils, including the deep clay found in this vineyard, provide excellent water retention and mineral complexity that translates directly into the wine's character. This combination of climate and soil has made McLaren Vale one of Australia's most celebrated Shiraz regions, consistently producing wines with the perfect balance of power and finesse.
