An instant classic. Apparently it was physically impossible not to make delicious shiraz in McLaren Vale in 2022 - it's really starting to seem that way anyway. Chocolatey, velvety, ripe and spicy. Say g'day to your new Aussie staple.

Why do we love this wine?

This deeply personable shiraz expresses ripe red berries, black pepper, spice and blackcurrant . Full-bodied and complex, the ripe characteristics of rich, broad fruits, and overt chocolatey notes tell you that, odds are, you're in the great McLaren Vale region. In other words, this is a strikingly regional wine that expresses all that is great about this phenomenal region. Fragrant American oak is displayed with intensity and vibrancy and, along with an already present texture and structure, set this wine up for a very long life in the cellar. Drink now - 2035 (at least).

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for shiraz, producing wines with intense fruit concentration and distinctive regional character. The warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast allow grapes to develop rich, ripe flavours while maintaining natural acidity. This Ivyburn expression perfectly showcases the region's signature style with its bold blackcurrant and chocolate notes, demonstrating why McLaren Vale is considered one of Australia's premier shiraz regions.

This wine is built for extended cellaring, with the producer recommending it will drink beautifully until at least 2035. The combination of ripe fruit concentration, structured tannins, and American oak integration provides the backbone for long-term ageing. While delicious now, the wine will develop greater complexity over the next 5-10 years as the oak integrates further and secondary flavours emerge. Store it in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature for optimal development.

The wine's rich fruit profile and chocolatey notes make it perfect for hearty red meat dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked braised meats. The black pepper and spice characteristics complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the full body can stand up to rich, flavourful dishes with strong seasonings. Consider pairing with aged hard cheeses, game meats, or even dark chocolate desserts to complement the wine's natural chocolate undertones.

The 96-point Wine Orbit score and five-star rating indicate exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian shiraz. These high scores reflect the wine's perfect balance of regional expression, winemaking skill, and vintage conditions. The 9/10 Halliday Vintage Rating confirms that 2022 was an outstanding year for McLaren Vale, meaning the grapes achieved optimal ripeness and flavour development, resulting in wines with both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential.

American oak contributes vanilla, spice, and subtle coconut notes that complement shiraz's natural fruit intensity without overwhelming it. Unlike French oak which tends to be more subtle, American oak provides more pronounced flavours that work harmoniously with shiraz's bold character. In this wine, the oak adds structure and complexity while enhancing the chocolate and spice elements, creating a well-integrated profile that will continue to evolve as the wine matures and the oak becomes more seamlessly woven into the overall flavour tapestry.
