Why do we love this wine?

From the sloping foot hills of the Barossa ranges comes a big, bad, bustling, Barossa beauty. The old vines of the site create slow-ripened, small bunches of shiraz grapes rich with concentrated black and dark red fruits. A deeply layered wine with fragrant American oak, hints of black pepper spice and enduring, yet fine-grained tannins. The sheer intensity of flavour puts this wine in a really good spot to reward aging for 10+ years but, as we always say, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Drink it whenever you want, why needlessly deprive yourself of this kind of happiness...

Frequently Asked Questions

The Barossa Valley's unique terroir combines warm, dry summers with ancient soils that stress the vines just enough to concentrate flavours. The sloping foothills where these grapes grow provide excellent drainage and sun exposure, while the old vines mentioned in this wine have developed deep root systems over decades, accessing mineral-rich subsoils that contribute to the wine's complexity and intensity.

Old vines naturally produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit, which is exactly what creates this wine's 'sheer intensity of flavour'. As vines age, they develop extensive root systems that tap into deeper soil layers, extracting more complex mineral compounds. The smaller bunches ripen more slowly and evenly, allowing for the development of those rich black and dark red fruit characteristics that define quality Barossa Shiraz.

This wine uses American oak, which imparts more pronounced vanilla and coconut flavours compared to French oak's subtle spice notes. American oak has a more open grain structure, allowing faster extraction of flavours and creating that 'fragrant American oak' character described. The choice perfectly complements Shiraz's bold fruit profile, as American oak can stand up to the wine's intensity without being overwhelmed.

With 95 points from Wine Orbit and fine-grained tannins, this wine has excellent aging potential of 10+ years, during which the tannins will soften and secondary flavours will develop. However, it's already beautifully balanced for immediate enjoyment - the concentrated fruit and well-integrated oak make it delicious now. The choice depends on your preference for primary fruit flavours (drink now) versus complex tertiary development (age it).

The wine's chocolate, plum, and vanilla notes, combined with black pepper spice, make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats that can match the wine's intensity. The American oak and full body also complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the fine-grained tannins help cut through rich, fatty dishes without overwhelming delicate flavours.
