What’s that? Luca Maroni, Italy’s greatest wine critic, has given this red a staggering 99 points? Just to be clear, his scale goes up to 99. This is the ceiling, the pinnacle, sheer perfection. And just to put a bow on it, Vivino places this in the top 2% of all wines worldwide. Whoa!

Why do we love this wine?

This wine is a blend of Sicilian native nero d’avola, and the French merlot. The combo produces a powerful blend of plush, ripe berries and structure, with future to age for many years. It shows balance, in spite of the power, with great freshness and acidity giving lift and relief from the densely concentrated body. It’s a crossover hit really - you get the exotic nero and the familiar merlot. An absolute delight that won’t last long.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the fascinating marriage between Sicily's indigenous nero d'avola grape and international merlot, creating what's known as a 'crossover' wine. The nero d'avola brings exotic Mediterranean character and intense concentration typical of Sicily's volcanic terroir, while merlot adds familiar plush fruit and structural backbone. This combination represents modern Sicilian winemaking at its best, where traditional varieties meet international styles to create something entirely new.

With its powerful structure and concentrated body, this wine has excellent ageing potential spanning many years from its 2019 vintage. The dense fruit concentration and natural acidity provide the foundation for extended cellaring, while the blend's inherent balance ensures it will develop complexity over time. The nero d'avola component is particularly known for its longevity, often improving for 8-12 years when properly stored.

Luca Maroni's 99-point score is exceptionally high and reflects his focus on technical perfection and pleasure-driven winemaking. Maroni, one of Italy's most influential critics, particularly values wines that achieve harmony between power and drinkability - exactly what this Sicilian blend delivers. His scoring system emphasises immediate appeal and structural integrity, suggesting this wine excels in both concentration and balance.

The wine's rich berry flavours and spice notes make it ideal for robust Mediterranean cuisine, particularly grilled lamb with herbs or aged hard cheeses like pecorino. The nero d'avola component loves traditional Sicilian dishes such as caponata or pasta with rich tomato-based sauces, while the merlot influence makes it equally suitable for international fare like beef stews or barbecued meats. The wine's natural acidity cuts through rich, fatty dishes beautifully.

Nero d'avola thrives in Sicily's intense Mediterranean climate and volcanic soils, producing wines with distinctive dark fruit intensity and mineral complexity that can't be replicated elsewhere. Often called 'Sicily's noble grape', it's perfectly adapted to the island's hot, dry conditions and expresses the unique terroir through concentrated flavours and natural structure. When blended thoughtfully with international varieties like merlot, as in this wine, it creates a bridge between Sicily's ancient winemaking heritage and contemporary global wine styles.
