Why do we love this wine?

There's always plenty of gusto around the office when wines like this come across the tasting desk. It's the kind of wine we top up a little more and leave to the side to revisit, eagerly awaiting our next taste. And when you look across the details of the wine it's easy to see why - low yielding single vineyard Barossa shiraz, oozing flavour and nuance, crafty use of American oak, small batch and single barrels selection all contribute to a wine hellbent on making a statement.

Frequently Asked Questions

This exceptional rating from Wine Orbit reflects the wine's single vineyard pedigree and meticulous winemaking approach. The low-yielding vines concentrate flavours intensely, while the careful selection of individual barrels ensures only the finest parcels make it into the final blend. The combination of Barossa's renowned terroir with Lights Valley's crafty use of American oak creates a wine with both power and finesse that critics recognise as outstanding.

American oak imparts distinctive vanilla and spice characteristics that complement Shiraz's natural dark fruit intensity. Unlike French oak which tends to be more subtle, American oak adds bold flavours of coconut, dill, and sweet spices that marry beautifully with the wine's allspice and dark chocolate notes. This oak treatment enhances the wine's full-bodied structure while adding layers of complexity that develop further with cellaring.

The wine's rich plum and dark chocolate flavours make it perfect for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steak, or aged hard cheeses. The allspice notes complement Middle Eastern spices beautifully, making it excellent with Moroccan tagines or Turkish kebabs. Its full-bodied structure can stand up to strong flavours, while the American oak adds enough sweetness to balance spicy barbecue sauces.

Premium Barossa Shiraz from low-yielding single vineyards typically develops beautifully over 10-15 years. The 2021 vintage is drinking superbly now but will continue evolving, with the dark chocolate and plum flavours integrating further with the oak. The wine's full-bodied structure and concentrated fruit provide excellent aging potential, though the American oak influence will gradually soften and become more integrated over time.

Single vineyard wines express the unique characteristics of one specific site, capturing the essence of that particular terroir. In the Barossa, this means showcasing the region's ancient soils and ideal climate for Shiraz in its purest form. Low yields from a single site concentrate flavours dramatically, creating wines with greater complexity and sense of place than blended regional wines, which explains why this expression commands such high critical acclaim.
