From one of the all-time great vintages - This is Coonawarra in a glass. Cabernet playing all the hits. Deep crimson to inky black, densely fruited and full. A monster in a bottle. This is an unbelievable price for such a smart wine, a genuine opportunity here.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Cassis and red currant right up front. Tannins grip the gums and arrest the mouth before some round, smooth oak work offers relief. This is a prime example of Coonawarra's reliability in delivering regional and varietal typicity: fresh red and black fruits into more briary, developed, darker fruit tones, followed by coffee, chocolate, cedar, and fruit-leather. This is a drink-some-hold-some wine, it's looking brilliant right now, but we can't help but wonder what excellence a few years in the cellar may bring...

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal drainage and mineral complexity that Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in. This unique terroir consistently produces wines with distinctive regional character - the fresh red and black fruit flavours that develop into darker, more complex briary notes. The cool climate allows for extended ripening, building the structured tannins and varietal typicity that make Coonawarra one of Australia's most reliable premium Cabernet regions.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant fruit and well-integrated oak, the structured tannins and full body suggest excellent cellaring potential. Coonawarra Cabernet typically peaks between 8-15 years, so this 2021 could evolve magnificently through the late 2020s and into the 2030s. The coffee, chocolate and cedar notes will likely become more pronounced, while the fruit will develop greater complexity and the tannins will soften further.

The grippy tannins and rich flavour profile make this wine perfect for protein-rich dishes that can stand up to its intensity. Classic pairings include grilled ribeye or lamb with rosemary, where the wine's cedar and chocolate notes complement charred flavours beautifully. The cassis and blackberry fruit also works wonderfully with game meats, aged cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts that echo the wine's natural cocoa characteristics.

The 97 points from Cairns Wine Show and 96 points from Wine Orbit indicate exceptional quality, particularly impressive for a 2021 vintage that's still relatively young. These scores suggest the wine demonstrates outstanding varietal character, regional expression, and winemaking skill. The 'Top Gold' and 'Killer Vintage' designations confirm this is among the standout Cabernets from what was clearly an excellent growing season in Coonawarra.

The 'round, smooth oak work' mentioned provides crucial structure without overwhelming the fruit, a hallmark of quality winemaking. The oak contributes those appealing cedar, coffee and chocolate notes while allowing the primary cassis and red currant flavours to shine through. This balanced approach means the oak acts as a supporting player rather than dominating, helping to soften the natural tannins while adding complexity that will continue to integrate beautifully as the wine matures.
