Maxwell's Eocene shiraz zeroes in on terroir with laser focus - single vineyard from the most northern section of their estate near Chalk Hill - where McLaren Vale is at its most McLaren Vale-y. Blackberry, black cherry, dark brambly fruits with charry oak hints and complex earthy undertones - this is genuinely top-shelf gear.

Why do we love this wine?

A deep purple, almost ink-like colour signals concentration immediately. Aromatics deliver all of that 'Cherry Ripe' charm with roasted oak threading through without dominating. The palate's where complexity really unfolds - layered lush fruits meeting genuine savouriness. Black bramble joins olive tapenade and bay leaf notes, all held together by a fine acid backbone and silky tannins that coat the mouth without ripping your gums to bits. Earthy, savoury spice emerges with oak shining through the back palate, adding polish and structure. Built for medium-rare scotch fillet with roast potatoes and broccolini, finished with red wine jus. Or just like a meat pie or something - it's not about the food, this is all about wine. Cellar confidently for 10-15 years or longer watching it develop even more complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Eocene Ancient Earth' name references the geological epoch when McLaren Vale's unique soils were formed, highlighting how this wine expresses the region's ancient terroir. The deep, ink-like concentration and complex savoury elements like olive tapenade and bay leaf showcase how old vine fruit from these ancient soils can produce wines with exceptional depth. This geological connection gives the wine its distinctive earthy backbone that sets it apart from more fruit-forward regional expressions.

This Shiraz is built for 10-15 years or longer of cellaring, during which the current lush fruit flavours will integrate further with the oak and develop more complex tertiary characteristics. The silky tannins will soften and meld, while the savoury spice elements will become more pronounced. The wine's fine acid backbone ensures it will age gracefully, developing leather, tobacco, and earthy nuances that complement the existing chocolate and plum notes.

The 96-point Wine Orbit rating reflects the wine's exceptional balance between power and finesse - it delivers full-bodied intensity without overwhelming tannins that 'rip your gums to bits'. Critics appreciate how the wine showcases classic McLaren Vale Shiraz characteristics while maintaining elegance through its fine acid structure. The complexity of flavours from Cherry Ripe aromatics to savoury olive tapenade demonstrates the winemaking skill that earns Maxwell its Five Star Halliday rating.

The wine's rich, savoury profile makes it perfect for red meat dishes, particularly medium-rare scotch fillet with roasted vegetables and red wine jus. The olive tapenade and bay leaf notes complement Mediterranean-style preparations, while the chocolate and spice elements work beautifully with game meats or aged cheeses. The wine's structure can handle bold flavours and rich sauces, making it versatile for hearty winter cuisine.

Old vine Shiraz typically comes from vines that are 35+ years old, producing lower yields but more concentrated, complex fruit. These mature vines have deeper root systems that access different soil layers, contributing to the wine's mineral complexity and the distinctive earthy, savoury characteristics evident in this bottle. The old vine fruit explains the wine's natural concentration and the sophisticated tannin structure that allows for extended cellaring potential.
