Why do we love this wine?

Ask anyone, serious Coonawarra red never comes cheap. What you won’t find in this wine is that peppermint choc-chip ice-cream flavour. Rather, you’d find a subtle, smooth cedar, tobacco and dark chocolate characters with fine elegant tannins that effortlessly slide down the throat. Even the most staunch lover of Shiraz will agree that there’s no better red wine match with slow cooked lamb than aged Cabernet, and one can only imagine how good this will be after an hour in the decanter. This might be a decade old, but it's still looking youthful, a positive sign for a decade or more still to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

The exceptional ratings (97pts Halliday, 96pts Wine Pilot, 95pts Q Wine) reflect this wine's masterful expression of Coonawarra's unique terra rossa soil and cool climate. The 2013 vintage showcases the region's ability to produce Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable complexity, featuring cedar, tobacco and dark chocolate notes without the minty eucalyptus that can sometimes dominate lesser Coonawarra wines. This level of critical acclaim indicates a wine that perfectly balances power with elegance.

At over a decade old, this Cabernet has entered its prime drinking window while retaining youthful characteristics that promise excellent cellaring potential. The tannins have softened considerably from their initial firm structure, creating the smooth, elegant mouthfeel described, yet the wine maintains enough backbone for another decade of development. This sweet spot of maturity means you're getting both immediate drinking pleasure and future investment potential.

The full-bodied structure and complex flavour profile of aged Cabernet Sauvignon creates a perfect synergy with rich, slow-cooked lamb. The wine's cedar and tobacco notes complement the meat's earthy flavours, while the refined tannins cut through the lamb's natural fats without overwhelming the dish. The dark chocolate undertones add depth that enhances the caramelised edges of slow-cooked meat, creating a classic pairing that's been celebrated for generations.

Absolutely - decanting for an hour will significantly enhance this wine's expression. While the 2013 has already developed considerable complexity through bottle aging, aeration allows the cedar, tobacco and dark chocolate characters to fully emerge and integrate. Decanting also helps any remaining firm tannins to soften further, ensuring the wine achieves that effortless, smooth delivery mentioned in the tasting notes.

This wine represents Coonawarra Cabernet at its most refined, deliberately avoiding the pronounced eucalyptus or 'peppermint choc-chip' character that can dominate wines from this region. Instead, Patrick of Coonawarra has crafted a more sophisticated expression that emphasises the region's ability to produce elegant, complex wines with subtle herbal notes rather than overt mintiness. This approach showcases why serious collectors prize premium Coonawarra Cabernet for its aging potential and food-friendly style.
