Pirramimma might well be the most popular producer to ever grace Vinomofo with their amazing wines. Their flagship shiraz will show you why. Very smooth, very silky, very fancy.

Why do we love this wine?

A bold and rich expression of McLaren Vale, even for this mob. 2022 proves itself, again, to be possibly the best vintage in McLaren Vale's long and storied history. Lush blood plums and black liquorice with well integrated, cedar-like oak and a cleverly interwoven tannin structure that will endure for many years to come. Although drinking wonderfully now, this wine will absolutely go the distance showing fantastic acid, fruit, tannin and oak. You can try to see how far it'll go if you like, but with a wine this tasty, we'd bet the farm that it'll outlast your patience.

Wine Pilot

Wine Pilot

" Gorgeous and plush McLaren Vale Shiraz here, named in honour of the family’s heritage, Earl of Hartfell and Earl of Annandale, from centuries ago. A very dark purple/maroon, there are lashings of chocolatey/vanillin oak here, but well handled. If a nudge of oak in your big and bold reds is your thing, you will absolutely adore this wine. The nose also gives us notes of dark plums, black cherries and coffee beans. There are rich mocha hints and a flick of roast meats. Ripe and rich, big and bold, but it is rather cuddly and comfortable. And at all times, seriously delicious. The chocolate and cocoa powder is also very much on the palate. There is fine balance, excellent length and cashmere tannins. Cracking stuff and should remain so for the next fifteen years. 96 Points." - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2022 vintage is being hailed as possibly the best in McLaren Vale's long history due to ideal growing conditions that produced wines with exceptional balance and intensity. This vintage delivered perfect ripeness while maintaining the natural acidity essential for long-term ageing, resulting in wines like The Earl that showcase both immediate appeal and serious cellaring potential. The combination of concentrated fruit flavours and well-integrated tannins reflects the region's ability to produce world-class Shiraz in outstanding years.

While The Earl is drinking beautifully now with its lush fruit and integrated oak, its well-structured tannins and balanced acidity suggest it will develop complexity over many years. The wine's cedar-like oak and tannin framework provide the backbone for extended cellaring, potentially improving for 10-15 years or more. However, given its immediate appeal and the temptation of its rich blood plum and liquorice flavours, many wine lovers find their patience tested long before the wine reaches its ultimate peak.

Pirramimma has earned recognition as a 'Mofo Fave Producer' by consistently crafting wines that balance power with elegance, particularly in their flagship Earl range. Their approach to McLaren Vale Shiraz emphasises fruit purity while using oak judiciously to add complexity rather than dominate the wine. The 96-point ratings from Wine Pilot and Wine Orbit reflect their ability to create wines that appeal to both critics and everyday drinkers, showcasing the true character of their premium vineyard sites.

The Earl's rich blood plum and blackcurrant flavours, combined with cedar notes and full-bodied structure, make it ideal for hearty dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats. The wine's well-integrated tannins can handle rich, fatty cuts while its fruit intensity complements bold flavours like rosemary, thyme, and black pepper. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, where the wine's structure can balance the richness while its fruit flavours provide a pleasant contrast.

McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for its distinctive combination of power and elegance, often displaying more refined tannins than Barossa Valley while maintaining greater richness than cooler climate regions. The region's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils produce wines with characteristic dark fruit flavours, spice notes, and the ability to age gracefully. The Earl exemplifies this regional style with its blood plum intensity and cedar-like oak integration, showing why McLaren Vale is considered one of Australia's premier Shiraz regions alongside its more famous neighbours.
