Why do we love this wine?

This strikes the fresh jam cord perfectly (and it's a hard chord to play); the trick is to find developed fruit flavours without falling into overly unctuous and too-ripe territory. When winemakers get it right the results are outstanding - lucky for you, this is one such wine. Spiced, herbacious, and delivering a long fantail finish that ties the wine neatly together and has you (almost unconsciously) lifting the glass back to your lips. I will tell you to cellar this (and you will be rewarded if you do) but it's hypocritical of me, because I've already consumed my modest allocation.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Reserve Draycott showcases the finesse side of Barossa Shiraz, achieving that elusive balance between ripe fruit intensity and elegant restraint. While many Barossa Shiraz wines can tip into overly rich territory, this wine demonstrates masterful winemaking by delivering developed blackberry and dark chocolate flavours without becoming unctuous. The herbaceous notes and spiced complexity add layers that distinguish it from more straightforward regional expressions.

This 2020 vintage is already drinking beautifully now, but its old vine fruit and full-bodied structure suggest excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. The wine's balanced acidity and integrated tannins will allow the dark chocolate and oaky elements to evolve into more complex tertiary flavours. However, given the wine's immediate appeal and the reviewer's own admission of consuming their allocation early, it's equally rewarding to enjoy now.

Old vine Shiraz typically comes from vines that are 30+ years old, with some Barossa vineyards dating back over a century. These mature vines produce smaller yields but more concentrated, complex fruit with deeper root systems that access different soil layers. This translates to wines with greater depth, more nuanced flavours, and better natural balance - explaining why this Reserve Draycott delivers such sophisticated blackberry intensity without heaviness.

The dual 97-point scores from Patrick Eckel and Wine Orbit reflect the wine's exceptional execution of a challenging style - rich Barossa Shiraz with finesse. Critics recognised the winemaker's skill in achieving developed fruit flavours while maintaining freshness and avoiding over-extraction. The wine's long, integrated finish and unconscious drinkability demonstrate the hallmarks of truly great winemaking that critics seek in premium Australian Shiraz.

The wine's rich blackberry fruit and dark chocolate notes make it ideal for red meat dishes, particularly grilled lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts that echo the wine's spiced character. The oaky elements complement barbecued meats beautifully, while the herbaceous qualities work well with Mediterranean herbs and aged cheeses. The wine's full body and long finish can stand up to robust flavours without being overwhelmed.
