It doesn't get better than this. This cracking Coonawarra cabernet from an old-school icon recently picked up a well deserved 95 points from the Halliday Wine Companion 2025. You would be hard-pressed to find a smarter deal this year.

Why do we love this wine?

This family winery have been landowners in Coonawarra for over 100 years. They are Coonawarra experts and the jewel in their crown is, of course, cabernet sauvignon. Their wines consistently score highly with critics and this 2020 cellar release is a showcase of a deep understanding of the land and masterstroke winemaking.

The blackberry fruit concentration is immense and elevated by fine, dancing tannin. It wouldn't be Coonawarra without the marriage of mint and tobacco, rounding out mouth-feel and driving complexity. This is fantastic drinking now and will age gracefully for another decade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal drainage and mineral complexity that produces Cabernet Sauvignon with exceptional structure and longevity. The cool climate allows for extended ripening, developing intense blackcurrant flavours while retaining natural acidity. This region is renowned for producing Australia's most elegant and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons, with the characteristic mint and eucalyptus notes that come from the unique terroir.

With its full-bodied structure and fine tannins, this wine will continue developing complexity for at least another decade from vintage date. The high critic scores (94-95 points) indicate exceptional balance and concentration that supports long-term ageing. As it matures, expect the primary blackberry fruit to evolve into more complex secondary flavours like leather, cedar, and dried herbs, while the tannins soften and integrate beautifully.

The rich, full-bodied profile with cocoa and allspice notes makes this perfect for red meat dishes, particularly grilled lamb with rosemary or aged beef steaks. The wine's structured tannins can handle rich, fatty foods and strong flavours like blue cheese or dark chocolate desserts. Traditional pairings include roasted game meats, where the wine's earthy tobacco notes complement the natural flavours beautifully.

The consistent 94-95 point scores across multiple critics reflect Reschke's century of Coonawarra expertise and their deep understanding of the terroir. Critics have recognised the wine's exceptional balance between power and elegance, with immense fruit concentration supported by fine, dancing tannins. The complexity achieved through the marriage of mint, tobacco, and rich fruit demonstrates masterful winemaking that showcases the best of what Coonawarra can produce.

This Cabernet is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration of fruit, tannin, and oak after four years from vintage. However, its structure and concentration mean it will reward patience, developing greater complexity and smoother tannins over the next 6-8 years. If you enjoy bold, fruit-forward wines, drink it now; if you prefer more developed, tertiary flavours, cellar it for 3-5 more years for optimal enjoyment.
