A wax dipped, deeply layered beauty out of the hands of one of Barossa's most adored producers. Macerated plums, fresh vanilla pods, cracked pepper and roasted coffee beans are just some of the layers that you can expect here. If you're a fan of indulgent reds, then this is one you can't miss.

Why do we love this wine?

You know when something seems too good to be true? That's what we thought of this wine before we got stuck in. I mean, a revered Barossa producer, with a premium, wax-dipped shiraz that received a glowing 95pt Halliday review that we could sell for... how much? Sure enough, when it hit the tasting bench, it surpassed all expectations by miles. This isn't just any wine of high calibre, this is an awe-inspiring Barossa shiraz. Given this winery is all about their heritage estate vineyards, I guess we should never have been surprised at how good this could get.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Schild Estate Edel represents exceptional value for a premium Barossa Shiraz, earning 96 points from Wine Orbit and 95 points from James Halliday. The wax-dipped presentation indicates serious cellar-worthy quality, while Schild's heritage estate vineyards provide fruit with genuine provenance and character. This combination of critical acclaim, premium packaging, and established vineyard sources creates a wine that punches well above its weight class in the competitive Barossa market.

The blackberry and liquorice profile is classic for premium Barossa Shiraz, where warm climate conditions concentrate fruit flavours while the region's distinctive soils contribute earthy, aniseed-like complexity. These flavours work in harmony with the spice elements, likely from both the fruit's natural tannins and any oak treatment. The full-bodied palate weight suggests these flavours will be rich and persistent, with the liquorice notes providing a sophisticated counterpoint to the primary fruit.

The 2019 vintage is approaching its optimal drinking window, having had sufficient time to integrate its tannins and develop secondary complexity. However, given the wine's premium status with wax seal and 95+ point ratings, it has the structure to cellar beautifully for another 8-12 years. The full-bodied nature and Barossa provenance suggest it will reward patience, developing more nuanced earthy and leather notes while maintaining its core fruit integrity.

This full-bodied Shiraz with its blackberry, liquorice and spice profile pairs magnificently with rich, flavourful dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye with pepper sauce, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The liquorice notes make it particularly compatible with Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme, while the wine's structure can handle bold flavours like barbecued meats or game dishes.

Schild Estate has earned recognition as a Five Star Halliday rated winery, placing it among the Barossa's elite producers alongside names like Penfolds and Henschke. Their focus on heritage estate vineyards gives them control over fruit quality from vine to bottle, a crucial advantage in the Barossa where vineyard sites can vary dramatically. The fact that this premium Edel bottling surprised even experienced tasters suggests Schild is producing wines that compete with the region's most celebrated labels.
