Moody, dark, swirling black fruits sit right at the core of this quintessentially Barossan beast. A smattering of red and blue fruits provide freshness and a little lift to what is otherwise very serious business.

Why do we love this wine?

There is no mistaking a St Hallett classic - when it comes to shiraz, and when it comes to Barossa, they don't muck about. The Sacred Ground is an old favourite among the 'big and bold' faithful, and this iteration is no departure from that well earned reputation. Rich, ripe, chocolate, earthy and opulent. Little hints of cedar and tobacco sit deftly around determined, full throttle fruit density. St Hallett at their best - unashamedly broad and imposing while remaining stylish, complex, and relinquishing no ground when it comes to sophistication.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Barossa Valley's warm climate and ancient soils create the perfect conditions for producing intensely concentrated Shiraz with exceptional depth. This Sacred Ground showcases the region's signature style - bold, full-throttle fruit density combined with earthy complexity that you simply can't replicate elsewhere. The valley's unique terroir allows St Hallett to craft wines that are both powerfully expressive and elegantly structured, representing the pinnacle of Australian Shiraz craftsmanship.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to allow its complex flavours of blackberry, dark chocolate, and plum to fully express themselves. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to soften the tannins and enhance the cedar and tobacco notes. The wine's full-bodied nature and 95-point rating suggest it will benefit from proper aeration, which helps integrate the rich fruit with the sophisticated oak influences.

This bold, chocolate and earth-driven Shiraz is perfect for rich, hearty dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steaks, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's tobacco and cedar notes also complement barbecued meats beautifully, while its plum characteristics make it an excellent match for game dishes or mushroom-based cuisine.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now, showcasing St Hallett's signature style at its peak, it also has excellent cellaring potential. The 2022 vintage's concentrated fruit and structured tannins suggest it will continue developing complexity over the next 8-12 years. If you enjoy bold, immediate fruit expression, drink it now; if you prefer more integrated, tertiary flavours, cellar it for 3-5 years for optimal development.

The 95-point rating from Sam Kim reflects this wine's exceptional balance of power and sophistication - a hallmark of St Hallett's winemaking philosophy. Critics recognise how the winery manages to create wines that are 'unashamedly broad and imposing' while maintaining elegance and complexity. The consistent high ratings across multiple platforms demonstrate that this Sacred Ground vintage successfully delivers the rich, opulent style that has made St Hallett a benchmark Barossa producer.
