From the hallowed soils of Barossa's Roennfeldt Road comes the strongest vintage yet for Utopos. Halliday's already stamped this giant with 95 points, and that's absolutely no surprise to anyone that's tried it. This is a classic expression of site and season - intensity and generosity without losing focus or form. A benchmark Barossa Shiraz from an unbelievably good year.

Why do we love this wine?

In the glass, it’s a vibrant purple-crimson. The nose is alive with ripe satsuma plum, blueberry and blackberry, lifted by citrus blossom and violets. Then comes the complexity - layers of spice, liquorice, dark chocolate, fruitcake, olive tapenade, even an earthy note ortwo. The palate is plush and powerful, yet framed by fine, sandy tannins and pitch-perfect acidity that give it structure for the long haul. The winemaking is as traditional as it is thoughtful: hand-selected shiraz blocks across the undulating Utopos vineyard, touched with 3% cabernet and 3% mataro for lift and complexity, then matured for 18 months in seasoned French foudres and hogsheads. The result? A Barossa shiraz that’s both approachable in youth and destined for greatness over the next 10-20 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Utopos Shiraz stands out through its thoughtful blending approach, incorporating 3% cabernet sauvignon and 3% mataro to add lift and structural complexity to the dominant shiraz. The 18-month maturation in seasoned French foudres and hogsheads creates a more nuanced profile than many bold Barossa reds. This traditional winemaking philosophy results in a wine that balances the region's characteristic power with remarkable elegance and age-worthiness.

While deliciously approachable now, this Shiraz is built for the long haul with a drinking window extending 10-20 years from vintage. The fine, sandy tannins and pitch-perfect acidity provide the structural backbone necessary for extended cellaring. During this time, the complex spice layers, dark chocolate notes, and fruit concentration will evolve and integrate, developing tertiary characteristics that showcase the wine's true potential.

The wine's plush texture and complex flavour profile make it ideal for rich, savoury dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-braised lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye with herb butter, or aged hard cheeses. The olive tapenade and earthy notes also complement Mediterranean-inspired dishes, while the dark chocolate undertones pair beautifully with game meats or even dark chocolate desserts.

The variation in scores reflects different tasting contexts and critic preferences, though all ratings fall within the 'outstanding' category. Halliday Wine Companion and Real Review's 95-point scores likely emphasise the wine's exceptional structure and ageing potential, while Vivino's 4.2 rating represents broader consumer appreciation. These consistently high scores across different platforms confirm the wine's exceptional quality and broad appeal among both critics and wine lovers.

The vibrant purple-crimson hue indicates a young, well-extracted wine with excellent colour density from quality fruit and careful winemaking. This deep colour suggests concentrated flavours and robust tannin structure, typical of premium Barossa shiraz. The purple tones reflect the wine's youth and the influence of the small percentages of cabernet and mataro, which contribute additional colour compounds and structural elements to the final blend.
