This wine reminds us, yet again, why Wolf Blass is the biggest Australian winery in the world. High-octane, high-quality, highly-rated. A balance of power and precision with a focus on big fruit and big mouthfeel, this is what the Australian classic cab/shiraz blend is meant to taste like.

Why do we love this wine?

As powerful and delicious as it is legendary, we were re-introduced to this irresistibly drinkable iconic Australian blend at the tasting bench recently. We were humbled, and reminded once again of exactly what made this fine brand the leader it is today. Intense black fruits and spicy plums on the nose, it’s rich, concentrated and complex on the palate, with layers of liquorice and chocolate woven into the fruits. Power and elegance. Outstanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

This iconic Cabernet Shiraz represents the pinnacle of Australian blending expertise, combining the structured tannins and cassis character of Cabernet Sauvignon with Shiraz's spicy warmth and plush texture. The Grey Label has been Wolf Blass's flagship for decades, earning its legendary status through consistent quality and the winery's masterful ability to balance power with elegance. The 2016 vintage showcases this heritage beautifully, with complex layers that reveal the synergy between these two noble varieties.

At eight years of age, this 2016 has entered its prime drinking window, where the initial fruit intensity has evolved into more complex secondary flavours like liquorice and chocolate. The tannins have softened and integrated beautifully, creating a seamless texture that allows the wine's full-bodied character to shine without overwhelming the palate. This maturation process is typical of premium Cabernet blends from warm Australian regions, which often need 5-8 years to fully express their potential.

The wine's rich concentration and spicy plum character make it perfect for robust dishes like grilled ribeye, lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses. The cigarbox and liquorice notes complement smoky barbecue flavours beautifully, while the blackcurrant intensity can stand up to rich sauces and game meats. The full-bodied palate weight means it won't be overwhelmed by bold flavours, making it an excellent choice for hearty winter cuisine or special occasion dining.

Langhorne Creek's unique terroir, with its ancient river soils and cooling lake breezes, contributes to the wine's remarkable balance of power and elegance. This region is renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon with exceptional colour density and structured tannins, while the maritime influence helps retain natural acidity even in warm vintages. The result is a wine that combines the intensity Australian reds are famous for with the finesse that makes them age-worthy and food-friendly.

This 2016 is drinking beautifully now, having reached that sweet spot where youthful fruit power meets mature complexity. While it could continue to develop for another 3-5 years, the integrated tannins and evolved flavour profile suggest it's at peak enjoyment. The 90-point ratings and 'Museum Release' designation indicate this is a wine that was built for both immediate pleasure and medium-term cellaring, so there's no wrong time to open it within the next few years.
