This wine reminds us, yet again, why Wolf Blass is the biggest Australian winery in the world. High-octane, high-quality, highly-rated. A balance of power and precision with a focus on big fruit and big mouthfeel, this is what the Australian classic cab/shiraz blend is meant to taste like.

Why do we love this wine?

As powerful and delicious as it is legendary, we were re-introduced to this irresistibly drinkable iconic Australian blend at the tasting bench recently. We were humbled, and reminded once again of exactly what made this fine brand the leader it is today. Intense black fruits and spicy plums on the nose, it’s rich, concentrated and complex on the palate, with layers of liquorice and chocolate woven into the fruits. Power and elegance. Outstanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Grey Label represents Wolf Blass at their finest, showcasing the classic Australian approach to blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Shiraz. The combination creates a wine that's both powerful and elegant, where Cabernet's structure and tannins marry beautifully with Shiraz's spice and richness. The 2016 vintage particularly excels, delivering the complexity and concentration that made Wolf Blass a household name in Australian wine.

Langhorne Creek's unique terroir, with its ancient soils and maritime influence from Lake Alexandrina, produces grapes with exceptional concentration and natural acidity. This region is renowned for creating full-bodied reds with remarkable depth, which explains the wine's intense black fruit character and complex layers of liquorice and chocolate. The cool lake breezes help retain freshness even in such a powerful, concentrated wine.

The wine's rich, concentrated palate and spicy complexity make it perfect for hearty dishes like grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or slow-cooked osso buco. The liquorice and chocolate notes complement game meats beautifully, while the cigarbox characteristics pair wonderfully with barbecued meats. Strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese also create excellent matches with the wine's bold fruit profile.

While this wine is absolutely delicious now, showing beautiful integration of its complex flavours, it has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for another 8-10 years. The 2016 vintage was exceptional in South Australia, producing wines with both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential. If you choose to cellar it, expect the tannins to soften further while the liquorice and chocolate notes become even more pronounced.

Museum Release indicates this wine has been carefully stored in Wolf Blass's cellars under optimal conditions, allowing it to develop additional complexity and maturity before release. This extended ageing has enhanced the integration of flavours, softened the tannins, and developed those distinctive secondary characteristics like the cigarbox notes. It's essentially a premium offering that showcases how the wine has evolved beyond its initial release state.
