From the sunny, southern end of Burgundy, this is Mâcon-Villages Chardonnay doing what it does best — clean, confident, and ridiculously easy to love. Fruit comes off the rolling Mâconnais hills around Mâcon and its neighbouring communes, where Chardonnay has been thriving since Gallo-Roman days on chalky limestone and lime-rich brown soils. The AOC (official since 1937) is basically Burgundy’s sweet spot for value: proper terroir, reliable pedigree, zero fluff. Marie André taps straight into that playbook with a 2024 that’s all about bright regional purity and effortless drink-now appeal

Why do we love this wine?

Pale gold with a green flicker, this 2024 Mâcon-Villages Chardonnay is Burgundy in bright, clean mode. The nose is pure orchard glow: lemon curd, green apple and ripe pear, sliding into white peach, acacia blossom and a chalky, limestone-mineral crunch that keeps it sharp and classy. It’s crisp yet nicely rounded — citrus and stone fruit up front, a gentle almond-cream lees texture through the middle, and zero heavy oak baggage. Zesty acidity pulls it long and clean with a faint wet-stone, spice flicker on the finish. Fresh, polished, dangerously drinkable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mâcon-Villages represents the southern, more approachable face of Burgundy, where the climate is warmer and the wines are typically more fruit-forward than their prestigious northern cousins from Chablis or Côte d'Or. This Marie Andre bottling showcases the region's ability to produce clean, mineral-driven Chardonnay without heavy oak influence, making it an excellent introduction to Burgundian style at a more accessible price point. The limestone soils still impart that characteristic chalky minerality that defines great Burgundy.

The 2024 vintage in Burgundy benefited from ideal harvest conditions that preserved natural acidity while allowing full flavour development. Marie Andre's winemaking approach emphasises freshness by avoiding malolactic fermentation and heavy oak treatment, which would soften the wine's natural zip. The limestone-rich soils of Mâcon-Villages also contribute to the wine's mineral backbone and help maintain that crisp, zesty character even in riper vintages.

This medium-bodied Chardonnay's almond-cream texture and citrus-stone fruit profile makes it incredibly versatile with food. The wine's mineral crunch and zesty acidity cut beautifully through rich dishes like roasted chicken with herbs, creamy seafood risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Its clean, unoaked style also complements lighter fare such as grilled fish, Caesar salad, or even spicy Asian cuisine where the wine's fruit sweetness can balance heat without being overwhelmed.

Serve this Chardonnay well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its crisp acidity and mineral qualities - too warm and you'll lose that refreshing limestone crunch. While it's designed for immediate enjoyment and showcases beautiful primary fruit flavours now, it can develop additional complexity over 2-3 years if stored properly in a cool, dark place. The wine's natural acidity and mineral structure provide enough backbone for short-term cellaring, though its charm lies in that 'dangerously drinkable' freshness.

This phrase indicates the wine was made with minimal or no new oak barrel influence, allowing the pure Chardonnay fruit and terroir to shine through unmasked. Instead of the buttery, vanilla-heavy style associated with heavily oaked Chardonnays, you get clean orchard and citrus flavours with subtle almond-cream notes from lees contact during fermentation. This approach is increasingly popular among quality producers who want to showcase varietal character and regional minerality rather than oak-derived flavours.
